Product Overview
A pump body that handles saline at 80 psi and doesn't pit after 200 autoclave cycles — that's the real test, not some tensile strength number on a data sheet. We've made hundreds of these for fluid handling OEMs, and the failure mode is almost always the same: porosity in the castings they were using before switching to our CNC-machined version.
Here's the thing about 304 pump bodies. The internal passages are the hard part. You've got intersecting bores, threaded ports at weird angles, and a sealing surface that needs to be flat to within 0.02mm while the rest of the body holds pressure. If your shop is doing this on a 3-axis and flipping the part six times, you're asking for datum drift. We run these on 4-axis machines — top features, port bores, and the main chamber in one setup. The second setup handles the bottom flange and outlet port. Two setups, one datum system.
304 machines slower than aluminum — everyone knows that. But the real cost driver is tool wear. We use coated carbide inserts with high-pressure coolant (70 bar) to keep the cutting zone clean and extend tool life by 3-4x. Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Why machined from billet instead of investment casting?
A: Castings have porosity. Even a "good" investment casting has microscopic voids that become leak paths under pressure or cause surface finish issues in fluid-contact areas. CNC machining from solid billet gives you zero porosity and consistent mechanical properties throughout. Cost is higher per piece, but your warranty claims drop to near zero.
Q: Can you do electropolishing for a mirror finish?
A: Yes, we work with a qualified electropolish partner. Ra 0.4 is achievable on internal bores. The tricky part is protecting threaded ports during the electropolish process — we mask them. Add 3-4 days to lead time for electropolishing.
Q: What's the minimum wall between two intersecting bores?
A: We recommend 1.5mm absolute minimum, 2mm for anything seeing pressure above 10 bar. Below 1.5mm you risk breakthrough during machining or a thin wall that flexes under hydraulic cycling. If your design has intersecting bores closer than that, let's talk about boring one first and drilling the cross-hole second — the sequence matters.
Q: Do you support cold water shock testing?
A: We can accommodate it as a special inspection step. We'll cycle the part between hot (80C) and cold (5C) fluid for your specified number of cycles and check for distortion or cracks. Extra charge, extra lead time — talk to us about your test protocol.
Q: How do you handle the angled port threads?
A: We use 4-axis positioning to tilt the workpiece and cut the threads with a single-point thread mill. This gives us perfect thread angle relative to the bore axis, which you can't get with a rigid tap on an angled hole.
