Torque converter is a non-rigid torque converter with liquid as the working medium, and is one of the forms of hydraulic transmission. The pump wheel transfers the mechanical energy of the input shaft to the liquid. The high-speed liquid spins the turbine, sending energy to the output shaft.

The torque converter transfers torque by the change of dynamic moment generated by the interaction between the liquid and the blade. The main feature of the torque converter is that it has a fixed guide wheel which is different from the hydraulic coupler. The guiding wheel of the liquid diversion effect makes the output torque of the hydraulic torque converter higher or lower than the input torque, so it is called the torque converter. The ratio of output torque and input torque is called the torque coefficient, and the zero speed torque coefficient is usually about 2~6 when the output speed is zero. The torque coefficient decreases with the increase of output speed. The input shaft of the torque converter is connected with the output shaft by the liquid, and there is no rigid connection between the working members. The characteristics of the torque converter are: can eliminate shock and vibration, overload protection performance and good starting performance; The speed of the output shaft can be greater than or less than the speed of the input shaft, and the speed difference between the two axes varies with the size of the transmitted torque; It has good automatic speed change performance, the output speed automatically decreases when the load increases, and automatically rises otherwise; Ensure that the engine has a stable working area, and the transient change of load will not be reflected to the engine.

The efficiency of the torque converter is high near the rated working condition, and the maximum efficiency is 85%~92%. The impeller is the core of the torque converter. Its type, layout position and blade shape have a decisive effect on the performance of the torque converter. Some torque converters have more than two turbines, guides or pump wheels to achieve different performance. The most common are forward turning (output shaft and input shaft turn in the same direction), single-stage (only one turbine) torque converters.
