The radiator outlet hose is a vital component of the cooling system, connecting the radiator outlet chamber to the engine cooling system to transport coolant. Within the automotive engine cooling system, the outlet hose typically connects one end to the lower outlet port of the radiator and the other end to the engine's inlet port. This allows coolant flowing out of the radiator to enter the engine's water passages via the outlet hose, completing the heat dissipation cycle. Its primary function is to return the cooled coolant from the radiator back to the engine, carrying away the heat generated by the engine to ensure it operates within the normal temperature range. If the radiator is likened to the “heat sink” of the cooling system, then the lower radiator hose serves as the “return line” for the coolant, responsible for delivering the cooled fluid back to the engine to re-enter the cooling cycle.

Over time, radiator hoses may develop various faults, with common issues including:

• Coolant Leakage: Aging or loosening seals at the hose connections to the radiator or engine can cause coolant seepage. Leakage points are often found at hose clamps or compression fittings, or at locations where rubber hoses have aged and cracked. Leaks cause the coolant level to drop, increasing the risk of engine overheating. The primary causes are rubber hose aging over time, frequent thermal expansion and contraction leading to cracking, or loose clamps causing poor sealing.
• Overheating or insufficient heating: Abnormal temperatures in the lower radiator hose (either excessively hot or cold) often indicate cooling system issues. For example, a scalding hot upper hose paired with a cold lower hose may indicate poor coolant circulation, potentially caused by a faulty water pump, stuck thermostat, or clogged radiator. Conversely, if the engine reaches normal operating temperature but the lower hose feels cool, it could be due to partial blockage in the radiator's lower hose section or damage to the water pump impeller.
• Clogged Lines: Impurities and scale can accumulate as coolant flows through the lines, eventually causing partial or complete blockages in the lower radiator hose. These blockages impede coolant flow, leading to poor heat dissipation and increased engine temperature. Causes include failure to remove contaminants from the cooling system and prolonged use of coolant without replacement, resulting in scale buildup.
• Rubber Hose Deterioration: Radiator outlet hoses typically use rubber or heat-resistant plastic hoses. Prolonged exposure to heat and aging reduces their elasticity, causing them to harden or even crack. Hose deterioration is a natural wear process; the longer the usage period, the more severe the aging, increasing the risk of leaks or bursting.

These issues severely compromise cooling system performance, necessitating timely inspection and maintenance.
