The automotive control arm (also known as a wishbone, A-arm, or track arm) is the 'force and steering hub' of the suspension system, responsible for transmitting all forces (longitudinal, lateral, vertical) experienced by the wheels to the vehicle body while ensuring that the wheels move and steer according to their designed trajectory.

Common faults:

• Ball joint wear: The dust cover breaks, causing lubricant loss and impurities to enter, resulting in looseness. This is the most common and dangerous fault.
• Bush wear and cracking: Rubber materials age, harden, crack, or fall off due to prolonged stress, high temperatures, and ozone exposure.
• Arm deformation or cracking: Usually caused by severe impacts (such as hitting curbs or accidents).

Fault symptoms:

• Suspension noise: When going over bumps or uneven roads, it produces a loose metallic clanking or clattering sound.
• Steering drift: The vehicle automatically deviates to one side on a straight road.
• Uneven tire wear: Due to improper alignment, tires exhibit uneven wear.
• Steering wheel vibration/shaking: The steering wheel vibrates at high speeds, or when going over bumps, there is a feeling of looseness in the chassis and excessive play in the steering.
• Decreased handling: When cornering, there is a greater sense of body roll and unstable body posture.

Replacement and maintenance recommendations:

1. Regular inspection: During each maintenance, have a mechanic check for cracks in the bushings, damage to the ball joint boot, and any play in the wheel by shaking it.
2. Replacement timing: Control arms are wear items and do not have a fixed replacement cycle. They should be replaced when the aforementioned fault symptoms appear or if any issues are detected during inspection.
3. Pairwise replacement: It is strongly recommended to replace both control arms on the same axle simultaneously to ensure consistent suspension performance on both sides and avoid new handling issues.
4. Four-wheel alignment is mandatory: After replacing the control arms, four-wheel alignment must be performed 100%, as installing new parts will completely alter the camber and toe angles of the wheels.
