The principle of a pulse oximeter was developed by Takuo Aoyagi, a Japanese Kohden researcher, in the early 1970s. The pulse oximeter measures oxygen saturation (SpO2) non invasively through the infrared sensor on the fingertip. Before that, the measurement of oxygen saturation required arterial blood sampling. With the help of pulse oximeter, the key parameters of oxygen saturation can be measured painlessly, continuously and in real time.
