The horizontal ribbon mixer consists of a mixing container, spiral stirring blades and transmission components. The spiral blades are generally made in two or three layers. The outer spiral gathers the material from both sides toward the center, while the inner spiral transports the material from both sides of the center outward, so that the two opposing flows create a powerful convective mixing action inside the trough. This counter-flow pattern keeps the whole batch in constant motion and produces a uniform blend in a short time.
Working PrincipleDuring operation the ribbon agitator rotates slowly inside the horizontal U-shaped trough. The outer ribbon pushes material from the two ends toward the middle, and the inner ribbon immediately pushes it back toward the ends, forming a continuous convective loop. Because the movement is gentle and relies on convection rather than high-speed impact, the material is blended thoroughly without being crushed or overheated. The mixer can be supplied with an optional jacket so that heat transfer oil, hot water or cold water can be circulated for heating or cooling during mixing.
ApplicationsIt is generally used for mixing viscous or cohesive powders and granules, as well as for mixing powders and granules with added liquids and pastes. Because viscous materials are difficult to clean, it is best suited to applications with high production volumes and infrequent product changes; it is even more effective for mixing pure dry powders. The gentle shearing action also makes it suitable for fragile or easily broken granules, and for dry powders that differ noticeably in density, since the convective flow reduces stratification.
FeaturesThe trough, ribbon agitator and shaft are fabricated from welded steel and finished for easy cleaning. Large inspection openings and a bottom discharge gate give good access to the interior, and the drive is mounted on a rigid frame so that the machine runs smoothly even at full load. Because the agitator turns slowly, power consumption and wear are low, and heat build-up in the product is minimal. Optional jacketed construction allows heating or cooling to be combined with the mixing step in a single machine.
