Our Nickel 201 products can be supplied according to ASTM B162 / ASME SB-162 for plate, sheet and strip; and ASTM B160 / ASME SB-160 for bar and wire.
Nickel 201 is a commercially pure wrought nickel (typically 99.6% Ni) that is essentially the same as Nickel 200, but with a lower carbon content (0.02% max). This reduced carbon content prevents embrittlement by intergranular carbon precipitation at temperatures above 315°C (600°F), making Nickel 201 the preferred choice for elevated-temperature service. The lower carbon content also reduces hardness, making the alloy particularly suitable for spinning and cold forming. The alloy offers good resistance to various reducing chemicals and caustic alkalies, high electrical and thermal conductivity, good ductility, a low work-hardening rate, and excellent weldability.

Annealed
Nickel 201 is normally supplied in the annealed condition. The standard annealing treatment is performed at approximately 760 – 1,050°C (1,400 – 1,922°F) followed by rapid cooling. This treatment provides optimal corrosion resistance and ductility for forming and fabrication. The alloy is not age-hardenable and is strengthened only through cold working.
Cold Working / Spring Temper
Nickel 201 is not age-hardenable – strength increases only through cold working. Annealed material typically exhibits tensile strength of 380 – 500 MPa (55 – 73 ksi), while spring temper can achieve 700 – 900 MPa (102 – 131 ksi). The alloy's low work-hardening rate makes it particularly suitable for cold forming by all conventional methods.
Nickel 201 provides the same excellent corrosion resistance as Nickel 200 in most environments, with the added advantage of elevated-temperature stability.

Nickel 201 (UNS N02201) is a low-carbon commercially pure nickel (99.0% min) that offers the corrosion resistance of Nickel 200 with improved performance at temperatures above 315°C (600°F).
The UNS designation is N02201; the European Werkstoff numbers are 2.4068 and 2.4061.
ASTM B162 / ASME SB-162 applies to plate, sheet and strip; ASTM B160 / ASME SB-160 applies to bar, rod and wire.
ASTM B161 / ASME SB-161 applies to seamless pipe and tube.
Nickel 201 has lower carbon content (0.02% max vs 0.15% max), which prevents embrittlement by intergranular carbon at temperatures above 315°C. Nickel 201 is preferred for elevated-temperature applications.
Nickel 201 is suitable for service at temperatures above 315°C where Nickel 200 would be at risk of embrittlement. It is used in sodium hydroxide evaporators up to 450°C and vessels up to 600°C.
It offers excellent resistance to caustic alkalis (including molten caustic), reducing chemicals, neutral and alkaline salt solutions, and dry chlorine at elevated temperatures. It also provides high resistance in food processing and synthetic fiber production.
Nickel 201 is not suitable for strongly oxidizing acids such as nitric acid or oxidizing salt solutions, which cause severe attack.
Yes. Nickel 201 offers very good weldability and can be welded by TIG, MIG, and resistance welding methods. Recommended filler materials include NICKEL 61 and welding electrodes NICKEL 141.
