ASTM A269 is the standard specification for seamless and welded austenitic stainless steel tubing for general service. Unlike ASTM A249 which is specific to boiler and heat exchanger applications, ASTM A269 covers tubing for general corrosion-resisting and low- or high-temperature service. All material shall be furnished in the heat-treated condition to ensure optimal corrosion resistance and mechanical properties. The tubing sizes usually furnished under this specification are 1/4 in. [6.4 mm] in inside diameter and larger with 0.020 in. [0.51 mm] nominal wall-thickness and heavier. Mechanical property requirements do not apply to tubing smaller than 1/8 in. [3.2 mm] inside diameter or 0.015 in. [0.38 mm] thickness.

Key selection considerations: ASTM A269 is the general service counterpart to ASTM A249. Select TP304L for general corrosive service with moderate chloride levels. Choose TP316L when molybdenum is required for pitting resistance in chloride-containing environments. TP321 is titanium-stabilized for service where intergranular corrosion resistance is required. The heat-treated condition is mandatory for all tubing under A269. For tubing certified to both ASTM A269 and ASTM A249, additional testing requirements may apply for ASME B31.3 applications.
