Available in 1/4H, 1/2H, 3/4H, and FH tempers, these stainless steel rolls offer exceptional strength and durability for demanding industrial applications.
Grade 301 stainless steel is typically supplied as strips and wires, achieving tensile strengths up to 1800 MPa across tempers ranging from 1/16 Hard to Full Hard. Through controlled analysis, it maintains sufficient ductility even in ½ hard conditions, making it suitable for aircraft components, rail car parts, and architectural structures. Tempers from ¾ to full hard are ideal for applications requiring high wear resistance and spring features with simple form designs.
Grade 301L, the low-carbon variant, offers enhanced ductility, while Grade 301LN contains higher nitrogen content for increased work hardening rates. These variants are specified under JIS G4305 and EN10088-2 standards respectively.

Alternative Grades
Table 5 - Possible Alternative Grades to 301 Stainless Steel
Grade
Reason for Choosing Alternative
304
Lower work hardening rate provides better ductility for forming operations
316
Higher corrosion resistance with acceptable work hardening compensation
Performance Characteristics
Corrosion Resistance
Grade 301 offers corrosion resistance similar to 304 stainless steel, performing well in mildly corrosive environments at ambient temperatures.
Heat Resistance
Exhibits good oxidation resistance for intermittent service up to 840°C and continuous service up to 900°C.
Heat Treatment
Solution treatment annealing is performed at 1010°C to 1120°C followed by rapid cooling. Intermediate annealing uses lower temperatures. Thermal hardening is not suitable for this grade.
Cold Working
Grade 301 and its low-carbon variants are primarily used as high-strength stainless steels with very high work hardening rates (approximately 14MPa increase per 1% reduction in area). Cold rolling and forming operations can achieve high strengths while maintaining residual ductility. The alloy is non-magnetic when annealed but becomes strongly magnetic when cold worked.
Welding
Suitable for all standard welding methods using grade 308L filler metal. Welded parts require annealing for maximum corrosion resistance, except for 301L and 301LN grades. Spot welding effectively assembles cold-rolled 301 components without compromising strength.
Applications
Rail car structural components
Air frame sections
Highway trailer components
Automotive wheel covers
Wiper blade clips and holders
Stove element clips
Screen frames
Toaster springs
Curtain walls
