304L stainless steel sheet is a versatile, low-carbon variant of the 304 grade, prized for its exceptional weldability and resistance to corrosion, particularly in environments prone to sensitization.
304L is defined by its low carbon content (≤0.03%), which minimizes carbide precipitation during welding. Its chemical makeup includes 18-20% chromium (Cr), 8-12% nickel (Ni), and trace elements like manganese (≤2%) and silicon (≤0.75%). This alloy ensures a stable austenitic structure, providing excellent corrosion resistance and formability.
304L's combination of corrosion resistance, weldability, and cost-effectiveness makes it suitable for diverse industries:
Welding Techniques: TIG (Tungsten Inert Gas) welding is preferred due to precise heat control. Pulsed current TIG further reduces residual stress and improves bead quality.
Filler Materials: Use 308L or 309L electrodes to match the low-carbon content and prevent corrosion at weld joints.
Post-Weld Treatment: Generally unnecessary, but annealing (1050-1100°C followed by rapid cooling) can restore ductility after heavy cold working.
Cost: In 2025, prices range from $15,300 to $24,000 per metric ton, depending on thickness, finish, and regional demand.
Availability: Widely stocked by global suppliers with standard sizes (1000-2000mm width, 2000-6000mm length) and custom cuts available.
While 304L offers excellent general corrosion resistance, 316L (with 2-3% molybdenum) is superior in chloride-rich environments. However, 304L is 15-30% cheaper and better suited for cost-sensitive applications where extreme durability isn't required.
