The American standard for stainless steel pipes mainly involves relevant specifications developed by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME). The following are the main American standards and their characteristics:
1. ASTM A312
Scope of application: Suitable for seamless and welded austenitic stainless steel pipes, such as TP304 and 304L.
Chemical composition: specifies the content range of elements such as carbon, silicon, manganese, phosphorus, sulfur, nickel, chromium, etc. For example, the chromium content of TP304 is 18% -20%, and the nickel content is 8% -11%.
Mechanical properties: including tensile strength (≥ 520Mpa), yield strength (≥ 210Mpa), and elongation (≥ 35% in heat-treated state, ≥ 25% in non heat-treated state).
2. ASTM A276
Scope of application: Suitable for stainless steel bars and profiles, such as 420 stainless steel pipes.
Chemical composition: specifies the content of chromium (12% -14%) and carbon (≥ 0.15%), as well as the UNS standard number (such as S42000).
Characteristics: 420 stainless steel has a high carbon content and high hardness after quenching, but its corrosion resistance is limited. It is mainly used for cutting tools, nozzles, etc.
3. ASME SA312 and ASME SA213
Scope of application: Similar to ASTM A312 and A213, but with added requirements of ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code, suitable for high temperature and high pressure environments.
Characteristic: Ensure the safety and reliability of materials under extreme conditions.
4. ASTM A276-2017
Scope of application: Specifically for 304L stainless steel pipes, the material grade, chemical composition, and mechanical properties are specified.
Features: As a low-carbon version, 304L has better welding performance and resistance to intergranular corrosion.
5. Other relevant standards
ASTM A269: Suitable for seamless and welded austenitic stainless steel pipes, commonly used in the food and pharmaceutical industries.
ASTM A789: Suitable for seamless and welded ferritic/austenitic stainless steel pipes for general use.
