316L stainless steel welded pipe, sometimes referred to as A4 stainless steel or marine grade stainless steel, is the second most common austenitic stainless steel pipe after 304/A2 stainless steel. Its primary alloying constituents after iron are chromium (between 16-18%), nickel (10-12%), and molybdenum (2-3%), with small quantities of silicon, phosphorus & sulfur also present.
The addition of molybdenum provides greater corrosion resistance than 304, with respect to localized corrosive attack by chlorides and to general corrosion by reducing acids, such as sulfuric acid. 316L grade is the low carbon version of 316 stainless steel. When cold worked, 316 can produce high yield and tensile strengths similar to Duplex stainless grades.
It is commonly used in the chemical and petrochemical industry, in food processing, pharmaceutical equipment, medical devices, potable water, wastewater treatment, marine applications, and architectural applications near the seashore or in urban areas.

ASTM A312 316L seamless stainless steel pipe is an austenitic stainless steel pipe manufactured without a welded seam, typically supplied in accordance with ASTM A312 / ASME SA312. It is widely used for corrosive and demanding industrial services.
2. What is the UNS number for 316L stainless steel? The UNS designation for 316L is UNS S31603.
3. Why is 316L suitable for chemical applications?316L contains chromium, nickel, and 2–3% molybdenum, providing excellent resistance to general corrosion, pitting, and crevice corrosion. Its low carbon content also provides good resistance to sensitization after welding.
4. Is 316L suitable for marine applications?Yes. 316L provides significantly better chloride and seawater corrosion resistance than 304 stainless steel, making it suitable for many marine and coastal applications.
However, continuously immersed or highly aggressive seawater environments may require Duplex 2205 or higher-alloy materials.
5. What is the difference between 316 and 316L?The main difference is carbon content:
The lower carbon content of 316L makes it particularly suitable for welded piping systems.
6. Is ASTM A312 316L pipe seamless?Yes. ASTM A312 covers seamless, welded, and heavily cold-worked austenitic stainless steel pipes. When specified as 316L seamless pipe, the pipe is manufactured without a longitudinal welded seam.
7. What sizes are available?Typical supply ranges can include:
Actual available combinations depend on the manufacturing process and applicable dimensional requirements.
8. What surface finishes are available?Common finishes include:
The appropriate finish depends on the application and customer requirements.
9. Can 316L seamless pipe be welded?Yes. 316L has excellent weldability and is widely used in welded piping systems. Its low carbon content helps reduce the risk of carbide precipitation during welding.
10. What industries use 316L seamless stainless steel pipe?Common applications include:
316L is generally non-magnetic in the annealed condition. However, some magnetism may develop after significant cold working.
12. Why choose 316L seamless pipe instead of 304L?316L contains molybdenum, giving it superior resistance to chloride-induced pitting and crevice corrosion compared with 304L. It is therefore preferable for many chemical, marine, coastal, and chloride-containing environments.
