Products Description

Material Identity: What Makes 304 the Decorative Standard

Grade 304 stainless steel is the most widely specified austenitic stainless alloy for decorative applications, and its dominance is rooted in genuine metallurgical advantages rather than convention alone. With chromium content of 18.0–20.0% and nickel content of 8.0–10.5%, 304 forms a stable, self-healing passive chromium oxide layer that provides reliable corrosion resistance across a remarkably broad range of environments. This passive film reforms instantly if scratched, meaning the material maintains its protective properties throughout fabrication handling, installation, and service life.

What distinguishes 304 from lower-nickel alternatives like 201 in decorative contexts is its superior resistance to atmospheric corrosion and its complete stability in mildly acidic or alkaline cleaning agents. Building maintenance crews routinely use cleaners that would etch or discolor lesser grades; 304 shrugs them off without losing surface integrity or developing haze. This makes 304 the defensible specification for projects where long-term appearance retention matters and where cleaning chemical exposure is unpredictable.

Beyond corrosion performance, 304 offers fabricators a deeply forgiving material. Its high elongation—typically 40% or greater in annealed condition—means it can be drawn, stretched, bent, and formed into complex geometries without cracking. Its work-hardening rate is moderate and predictable, so press brake operators can dial in consistent bend angles without fighting excessive spring-back. And unlike free-machining grades, 304 welds cleanly with standard GTAW (TIG) procedures, producing joints that can be ground and refinished to match the surrounding brushed surface. These properties have made 304 the default material for architectural metal fabricators, and the 4×8 sheet format has evolved alongside it as the preferred blank size for nesting and cutting layouts.

The Brushed Finish: Engineered for Visual Consistency

Our commercial grade brushed finish—also referred to as No.4 or satin finish depending on regional terminology—is produced on automated wide-belt abrasive lines that deliver repeatable, uniform results sheet after sheet, batch after batch. The process applies a single-direction linear grain using 180–240 grit abrasive belts under controlled pressure, speed, and tension. The result is a continuous, parallel grain structure with consistent depth and spacing from edge to edge.

This consistency is the defining quality metric that separates commercial-grade brushed sheet from commodity alternatives. In decorative fabrication, panels are rarely used in isolation. Kitchen splashbacks meet cabinet panels meet appliance fronts. Elevator wall panels meet door skins meet control panels. Reception desk faces meet column cladding. Across all these junctions, the eye detects even subtle differences in grain depth, reflectivity, or directional alignment. By controlling every parameter of the brushing process—belt grit specification, contact pressure, feed rate, and belt tension—we ensure that sheets from different production batches can be installed adjacent to each other without visible mismatch.

The brushed surface also serves a practical function in decorative service. Its low-to-medium reflectivity diffuses light softly rather than producing harsh specular highlights, making it visually comfortable under the varied lighting conditions encountered in architectural interiors. The linear grain naturally masks fingerprints, minor scuffs, and micro-abrasions that would be immediately visible on a mirror-polished surface. In high-touch environments—restaurant interiors, retail fixtures, hotel lobbies, residential kitchens—this self-concealing property keeps surfaces looking clean between maintenance cycles. And when refinishing eventually becomes necessary after years of service, the surface can be locally re-brushed with a handheld abrasive pad to restore its original appearance, a field repair that is impossible with plated, painted, or PVD-coated alternatives.

Dimensional Range & Thickness Selection

The 4'×8' (1219×2438mm) format is our standard stock size, available across the full 0.3 to 6.0mm thickness range. Thickness tolerance is maintained to ASTM A480 and GB/T 3280 standards: ±0.02mm for gauges at or below 1.0mm, and ±0.03 to 0.08mm for the 1.2 to 6.0mm range depending on the specific gauge. Every sheet is identified with its nominal thickness, and actual measured thickness data is recorded and traceable to the production lot.

At the lightest end of the spectrum, 0.3 to 0.5mm sheets serve as decorative laminates—bonded to MDF, plywood, aluminum honeycomb, or rigid insulation substrates to create finished panels for cabinetry, wall cladding, ceiling panels, and retail display fixtures. These thin gauges are not self-supporting in large spans but deliver the full aesthetic and corrosion properties of 304 at minimum weight and material cost. When bonded to a suitable substrate, they produce rigid composite panels that combine the surface qualities of stainless steel with the flatness and handling characteristics of the backing material.

In the 0.6 to 1.0mm range, we supply sheets for general decorative sheet metal fabrication—kitchen splashbacks, cabinet door inserts, appliance trim panels, furniture cladding, signage, and interior wall panels. These gauges provide sufficient self-supporting rigidity for medium-sized panels while remaining readily formable on standard press brakes and folder machines. They can be sheared, punched, notched, and bent using the tooling already present in most sheet metal shops, making them the most commonly specified thicknesses in decorative fabrication.

For applications requiring greater dent resistance and structural contribution, 1.2 to 2.0mm is the preferred range. Elevator door skins, column cladding, reception desk fronts, restaurant counter faces, wall protection panels, and exterior decorative features benefit from the added rigidity and impact resistance these gauges provide. Panels in this range maintain flatness across larger unsupported spans and resist the oil-canning effect that can occur with thinner sheets in framed installations.

At 2.5 to 6.0mm, the sheets transition into structural decorative territory—staircase stringers, balustrade infill panels, feature entrance door slabs, furniture legs and frames, canopy cladding, and sculptural elements where the stainless steel itself bears load rather than merely decorating a separate structure. These heavy gauges require appropriate processing equipment—heavy-duty shears, high-tonnage press brakes with larger V-die openings, and plasma or laser cutting for profile work. We recommend that fabricators verify their equipment capacity before specifying gauges above 3.0mm, as bending forces increase with the square of material thickness.

Surface Protection & Handling

Every brushed sheet ships with a protective PVC film applied to the finished face. This film is engineered to withstand the rigors of sheet metal processing—it survives shearing, resists peeling during bending, and withstands moderate press brake die contact—while removing cleanly without leaving adhesive residue after final installation. For exterior applications or projects with extended construction schedules, we offer an upgraded UV-resistant film that will not degrade or become brittle under prolonged sunlight exposure on site.

Sheets are interleaved with protective paper and stacked on export-grade fumigated timber pallets. Each pallet is wrapped in weatherproof polyethylene with desiccant packs included for ocean freight shipments. Edge protectors and steel strapping ensure the load remains stable and sheet corners arrive undamaged. Grain direction is marked on both the packaging and the protective film of each individual sheet.

Fabrication Notes for Decorative Applications

Achieving professional results with 304 brushed sheet requires attention to detail during fabrication. When bending, orient the grain direction parallel to the bend line wherever the design allows. Bending perpendicular to the grain can produce micro-cracking along the abrasive striations—often invisible to the naked eye in the workshop but potentially noticeable under the harsh, directional lighting of the installed environment. A minimum internal bend radius of one times the material thickness is recommended for gauges up to 2.0mm, increasing to 1.5 times thickness for heavier gauges.

For welded assemblies, any heat-affected zone will lose its brushed finish and require post-weld refinishing. This involves grinding the weld bead flush, then progressively blending through finer abrasive grits until the repaired area matches the surrounding surface. With skill and patience, this can produce an invisible repair; however, we always recommend designing decorative weldments so that exposed joints are minimized or positioned away from primary sightlines. Where possible, folded corners, mechanical fastening, or structural adhesive bonding can eliminate the need for visible welding entirely.

When cutting the sheet for nested part layouts, a protective plywood or MDF backer board beneath the sheet will prevent the brushed surface from being marred by debris on the shear or saw table. Laser cutting produces clean, precise edges but will leave a narrow heat-affected zone along the cut path; this edge is typically hidden in folded seams or covered by adjacent panels in the finished installation. Waterjet cutting eliminates the heat-affected zone entirely and is the preferred method when cut edges will remain visible.

Quality Assurance & Certification

Every shipment is accompanied by a mill test certificate to EN 10204 3.1, documenting the heat number, full chemical analysis, and mechanical properties including tensile strength, yield strength, elongation, and hardness. This traceability links each sheet back to its originating coil and heat, providing the documentation chain required for architectural specification compliance and warranty support. Positive Material Identification by handheld XRF analyzer can be performed prior to shipment upon request, providing additional verification that the material delivered matches the grade specified.

If you have a specific project with defined thickness, quantity, or delivery schedule requirements, I can provide detailed weight-per-sheet calculations, recommend the optimal gauge for your application, or prepare a commercial quotation for your review.
