Deoxidation Practice: A179 tubes are fully killed steel, meaning they are fully deoxidized with silicon or aluminum, resulting in superior internal surface quality and resistance to aging.

Properties are specified for tubes in the cold-drawn, annealed, or normalized condition. The cold-drawn condition is most common.

  • Hardness: Typically ranges from 72-85 HRB (Rockwell B), indicating a relatively soft, formable material.

 

2. Fins

(1) Fin’s Type: Embedded

How it's made: A precise helical groove is machined (or rolled) into the steel tube wall. A strip of aluminum fin material is fed into the groove. A special rolling tool then "swages" or compresses the steel on both sides of the groove over the aluminum fin root, cold-forming the steel to mechanically lock the fin in place.

(2) Fin’s material: Aluminum 1060

Aluminum 1060 is a commercially pure aluminum (99.6% Al minimum).

  • Excellent Thermal Conductivity: ~230 W/m·K, which is about 4 times higher than carbon steel. This is the primary reason for using aluminum fins—they rapidly conduct heat from the tip to the base.
