ASTM B111/ASME SB111 specifies seamless copper-alloy condenser and heat-exchanger tubes. Grade UNS C71500 (CuNi 70/30, EN CuNi30Mn1Fe) is a copper-based alloy with ~30% nickel, plus controlled iron and manganese. Supplied annealed, it has 483 MPa tensile strength and exceptional ductility. Its defining advantage is outstanding resistance to seawater impingement corrosion, stress-corrosion cracking, and biofouling—far superior to stainless steels in chloride environments. Thermal conductivity is ~15 times higher than steel, enabling superior heat transfer. However, it is limited to moderate temperatures (≤400°C). Extensively used in marine condensers, offshore coolers, and desalination plants.
UNS C71500 (CuNi 70/30) is specifically engineered for aggressive, high-risk aqueous environments—primarily involving seawater, brackish water, and contaminated brine—where standard copper alloys or stainless steels fail prematurely.

1. High-Velocity Seawater (Erosion-Corrosion Environments)
Condition: Seawater flow velocity exceeding 3.0 m/s (up to 4.5 m/s).
Why: At these speeds, the protective oxide film on C70600 (90/10) or aluminum brass gets mechanically stripped away (impingement attack). C71500 has superior film stability and hardness to withstand turbulent zones, such as inlet ends or U-bend areas of heat exchangers.
2. High-Temperature Marine Environments
Condition: Seawater or cooling water operating continuously above 45°C–50°C, peaking at 90°C to 120°C.
Why: Lower copper alloys suffer from accelerated de-alloying and pitting at elevated temperatures. C71500 maintains its corrosion resistance in hot tropical waters (e.g., Middle East/Persian Gulf seawater intake) and high-temperature engine jacket-water coolers.
3. Polluted or Chemically Aggressive Waters
Condition: Water contaminated with Hydrogen Sulfide (H₂S), Ammonia (NH₃), or industrial wastewater/effluents.
Why: Brass and 90/10 CuNi are highly susceptible to Stress Corrosion Cracking (SCC) and sulfide-induced corrosion in polluted harbors or industrial outfalls. C71500's high nickel content provides immunity to ammonia attack.
4. Sand-Laden or Silty Waters (Erosive Media)
Condition: Coastal or estuarine waters carrying suspended sand, silt, or mud particles (common near river deltas or shallow offshore platforms).
Why: The higher mechanical strength and thicker, iron-enriched protective layer of C71500 resist the "sandblasting" effect that would quickly erode softer copper alloys.
5. Stagnant or Low-Flow Seawater (Microbiological/Fouling Risk)
Condition: Systems with frequent shutdowns, tidal variations, or intermittent operation where water stagnates.
Why: While biofouling occurs on all materials, C71500's copper-ion release inhibits macro-fouling (mussels/barnacles). More importantly, it resists pitting and crevice corrosion under deposits during stagnant periods—a common failure mode for aluminum brass.
