ASTM B163 / ASME SB163 UNS N02200 / Nickel Alloy 200 Seamless Heat Exchanger Tube is normally selected for shell-and-tube and bayonet heat exchangers, falling-film evaporators, reboilers, preheaters and condensers in caustic soda and chlor-alkali plants, in synthetic fibre and viscose spin-bath heating, in food-grade and fatty-acid processing, in high-purity water and condensate circuits of power plant, and in dry chlorine and phosgene service. In these duties the design driver is rarely uniform wall thinning; it is caustic stress-corrosion cracking, alkaline and chloride pitting of stainless alternatives, or metallic pickup that would discolour or contaminate the product. Nickel 200 is specified because it removes those specific failure modes and simultaneously provides a thermal conductivity of about 70 W/m·K (at 20 °C), roughly three times that of austenitic stainless steel, which lowers the tube-wall temperature gradient and the metal temperature in fired and condensing service.
