This product is a self-tapping drywall screw manufactured to EN 14566 and ASTM C1002, featuring a bugle head with a Phillips (PH2) cross recess drive. The screw incorporates a sharp needle point that enables self-piercing into plasterboard and light-gauge steel framing without pre-drilling. Manufactured from case-hardened carbon steel (AISI 1018 or equivalent) with a black phosphate coating, the screw is fully threaded and available in coarse thread (for timber framing) and fine 60° twin thread (for metal studs up to 0.79mm gauge) variants. Typical diameters range from 3.5 mm to 4.8 mm, with lengths from 25 mm to 150 mm. Widely used for fixing plasterboard to metal or timber framing in internal drywall construction, ceiling systems, and partition walls.
The product complies with EN 14566:2008+A1:2009 (European standard for screws for gypsum plasterboard) and ASTM C1002 (US standard for steel self-piercing tapping screws for gypsum board). Thread sizes typically include 3.5 mm (#6) and 4.2 mm (#8) and 4.8 mm (#10) diameters. Lengths range from 25 mm to 150 mm in standard increments. The bugle head features a countersunk profile that tapers into the drywall surface, with a head diameter of approximately 8.0 mm. Drive type is Phillips No. 2 (PH2) recess. The screw is fully threaded along the entire shank for maximum holding power in plasterboard.
Coarse thread variants feature a single-lead thread with wider pitch, specifically designed for fixing plasterboard to timber framing. Fine thread variants incorporate a 60° twin thread geometry, optimised for fastening plasterboard to light-gauge steel framing up to 0.79 mm (24 gauge) thickness. Fine thread screws require less torque to drive than standard twin-fast designs and provide superior holding power in metal studs. For steel framing thicker than 0.79 mm, a longer screw with minimum 10 mm penetration into the metal is required. The sharp needle point enables self-piercing action, eliminating the need for pre-drilling.
The screw is manufactured from case-hardened carbon steel (AISI 1018 or equivalent) with a minimum Rockwell C44 surface hardness, ensuring sufficient strength to penetrate steel framing without deformation. The black phosphate coating provides mild corrosion resistance for internal drywall applications, reduces friction during installation for smoother driving, and offers a non-reflective matte black finish. The coating is suitable for internal use only and is not recommended for exterior or high-moisture environments. The Phillips PH2 drive is standardised for use with matching screwdriver bits supplied with the product. The bugle head is designed to seat flush with the plasterboard surface without crushing the paper or tearing the board, enabling a smooth finish for taping and jointing.
