This product is a metric machine screw manufactured to DIN 7985 (withdrawn and replaced by ISO 7045), featuring a pan head with a cross recess (Phillips H-type or Pozidriv Z-type) and a fully threaded shank. Available in carbon steel property classes 4.8, 8.8, 10.9, and 12.9, with thread sizes from M1.6 to M10 and lengths from 2 mm to 180 mm. Used for fastening components with pre‑tapped holes or through‑holes where a nut is not required, commonly found in machinery housings, electronic enclosures, sheet metal assemblies, and household appliances.
Thread sizes range from M1.6 to M10 with metric coarse pitch per ISO 261. Head diameter ranges from 3.05 mm (M1.6) to 15.79 mm (M8); head height from 1.3 mm (M1.6) to 6.0 mm (M8). The standard has been withdrawn and replaced by ISO 7045, with changes to head heights, head diameters, thread lengths, and cross recess penetration depths. DIN 7985 screws are product grade A (precision class). Cross recess types available: Type H (Phillips) and Type Z (Pozidriv).
Property class 4.8 (low-carbon steel, tensile 400 MPa, yield 320 MPa) for general light‑duty applications. Class 8.8 (medium‑carbon steel, tensile 800 MPa, yield 640 MPa) for higher‑strength requirements. Class 10.9 (tensile 1040 MPa, yield 900 MPa) and class 12.9 (tensile 1220 MPa, yield 1100 MPa) are available for heavy‑duty applications. Plain carbon boron steel with carbon content below 0.25% requires minimum manganese content of 0.6% for class 8.8. Thread tolerance is 6g.
Surface finishes include zinc plating (clear, yellow, black, blue passivation), black oxide, hot‑dip galvanizing, and zinc flake coatings. Zinc plating thickness typically 5 μm, with Cr(VI)‑free options available. The pan head provides a larger bearing surface than countersunk or round heads, increasing axial clamping force and simplifying assembly. Screws are fully threaded along the entire shank, allowing engagement at any point along the length. Applications include machinery cases, electronic enclosures, sheet metal stacking, automotive components, and household appliances where a neat, rounded head finish is required.
