410 Martensitic Stainless Steel Coil Cold Rolled 0.3mm-4mm Hardenable 12Cr

Our 410 (UNS S41000) martensitic stainless steel coil represents the go-to hardenable stainless steel grade for applications requiring moderate corrosion resistance combined with high strength and hardness achievable through heat treatment. With approximately 12% chromium and carefully controlled carbon content (0.08-0.15%), 410 undergoes a martensitic phase transformation upon cooling from the austenitizing temperature, enabling a wide range of mechanical properties through tempering. In the annealed condition, 410 exhibits yield strength of approximately 275 MPa with good ductility for forming and machining. Through austenitizing at 925-1010C followed by oil/air quenching and tempering, hardness values from 25 HRC (soft temper, maximum toughness) to 45 HRC (hard temper, maximum strength and wear resistance) can be achieved. The martensitic microstructure is inherently ferromagnetic with stable magnetic properties independent of heat treatment condition. Our 410 coils are manufactured through EAF with AOD refining, continuous casting with controlled cooling, hot rolling, annealing at 800-900C followed by slow cooling, and cold rolling to final gauge with intermediate annealing. The annealed cold rolled product is supplied in the soft condition for optimal formability and subsequent customer heat treatment. Each heat is verified by OES, tensile testing in both annealed and hardened-and-tempered conditions, and hardness testing. Complete EN 10204 Type 3.1 mill test certification is standard.

• Heat Treatable to Wide Range of Properties: Through controlled austenitizing and tempering, 410 can achieve hardness from 25 HRC (with good ductility and impact toughness) to 45 HRC (with high strength and excellent wear resistance). This versatility allows a single material grade to serve multiple component applications through post-fabrication heat treatment optimization. Through-hardening of sections up to approximately 25mm in oil quenching covers the majority of component sizes produced from coil stock.
• Good Wear and Abrasion Resistance: In the hardened and tempered condition, 410 provides substantially better resistance to abrasive wear, adhesive wear, and galling than austenitic stainless steels such as 304. This wear resistance is essential for sliding contact applications (valve stems, pump shafts, actuator rods), cutting edges (knife blades, shear blades, cutting dies), and components exposed to particle erosion. Surface hardness exceeding 40 HRC with stainless matrix provides unique properties unavailable in tool steels or austenitic grades.
• Moderate Corrosion Resistance at Competitive Cost: With 12% chromium, 410 provides adequate corrosion resistance for mild environments including fresh water, atmospheric exposure, food acids, and many organic chemicals at ambient temperatures. The relatively simple alloy composition (essentially Fe-12Cr with controlled carbon) makes 410 one of the most economical stainless steel grades, ideal where more expensive 304 would be performance overkill.
• Excellent Machinability in Annealed Condition: In the fully annealed soft condition, 410 machines similarly to medium-carbon alloy steels with good chip formation, reasonable tool life, and acceptable surface finish. This enables efficient production of complex components by machining from annealed coil stock, followed by hardening and tempering to final properties. Annealed 410 offers significantly better machinability than the strain-hardening austenitic grades.
• Magnetic Properties for Specialized Applications: The ferromagnetic martensitic microstructure provides stable magnetic properties in all heat treatment conditions. Saturation magnetization is comparable to low-alloy steels (~1.6 Tesla), making 410 suitable for solenoid cores, magnetic actuators, magnetic bearing components, and applications requiring magnetic workholding during machining or assembly operations.
• Good Dimensional Stability After Heat Treatment: The martensitic transformation during quenching results in a small predictable volume expansion (approximately 0.3-0.4% linear) that can be compensated in component design and pre-heat-treatment machining allowances. Subsequent tempering produces a small volume contraction partially offsetting the quench expansion. With consistent heat treatment parameters, net dimensional change is reproducible within tight tolerances for near-net-shape precision component processing.
• Wide Availability in Standard Mill Sizes: As one of the most widely produced martensitic stainless steel grades, 410 is readily available in standard coil dimensions from multiple mill sources, ensuring competitive pricing and short lead times. The grade is fully covered by ASTM A240, EN 10088-2, and JIS G4305 standards, providing a globally consistent specification framework for procurement and quality assurance.

410 martensitic coils serve applications requiring moderate corrosion resistance with hardenability to high strength and hardness. Primary sectors include cutlery and kitchen tools (knife blades, scissors, kitchen shears, spatulas, serving utensils), valve and pump components (valve stems, seats, and trim in water and low-pressure steam service; pump shafts, wear rings, impeller wear plates; butterfly valve discs), fasteners and hardware (high-strength corrosion-resistant bolts, self-tapping screws, spring washers, retaining rings), automotive components (fuel injection system components, EGR valve parts, turbocharger actuator rods, brake system components), industrial blades and cutting tools (shear blades for paper/textile/plastic, slitter knives, doctor blades, scraper blades), general engineering (shafts, spindles, axles requiring moderate corrosion resistance; wear plates and guides; bearing races), and turbine components (steam turbine blading for wet steam stages, gas turbine compressor blading, turbine fasteners). For maximum hardness (40-45 HRC), carbon content toward the upper specification limit (0.12-0.15%) is recommended to ensure adequate hardenability.

410 coils are packaged with acid-free interleaving paper, VCI anti-corrosion paper, waterproof polyethylene film with sealed seams, and high-tensile steel strapping. Edge protection rings maintain geometry. Coils on ISPM 15 pallets. Standard EN 10204 Type 3.1 certification includes annealed-condition tensile/hardness results. Optional heat treatment simulation testing (laboratory austenitizing, quenching, and tempering of coupon specimens from each heat) is available to verify hardening response before shipment.
