Why Hastelloy C-276 (UNS N10276) for Heat Exchangers?
Heat exchangers are the most demanding application for tubing. This alloy is chosen specifically because it offers:
Unmatched Corrosion Resistance: Excellent resistance to pitting, crevice corrosion, and stress corrosion cracking (SCC), especially in wet chloride, sulfuric acid, hydrochloric acid, and phosphoric acid environments.
Oxidizing & Reducing Media Resistance: Unlike 300-series stainless steels, C-276 resists both oxidizing and reducing chemicals. It stands up to mixed acids (e.g., HNO₃ + HCl) where most metals fail.
Fouling Resistance: The smooth, high-nickel surface resists scale and polymer buildup, maintaining heat transfer efficiency over long operational cycles.
High-Temperature Stability: Can operate continuously in heat exchangers up to ~400°C (750°F) in corrosive environments, and up to ~1000°C (1832°F) in oxidizing conditions for short durations.
Fabrication: Excellent ductility allows it to be easily rolled and expanded into tubesheets, and bent into U-tube configurations without cracking.
Applications
These tubes are often used in industries such as chemical processing, pulp and paper, and waste treatment, where resistance to corrosion and high temperatures is critical.
