ASME B16.9 is a standard that covers the overall dimensions, tolerances, ratings, testing, and markings for factory-made wrought buttwelding fittings in sizes NPS 1/2 through NPS 48 (DN 15 through DN 1200). The function of butt-welding pipe fittings is to join or connect pipes together in a permanent and leak-proof manner. These fittings are designed for use in pipelines where a smooth and uninterrupted flow of fluids is essential. They provide a strong and reliable connection by welding the ends of two pipes directly together.
Buttwelding fittings come in various types, such as elbows, tees, reducers, caps, and crosses. Each type serves a specific purpose:
Elbows: Elbows are used to change the direction of flow in a pipeline. They come in different angles, such as 45 degrees and 90 degrees, allowing for smooth directional changes.
Tees: Tees have three openings and are used to create branches in a pipeline, dividing the flow into multiple directions.
Reducers: Reducers are used to connect pipes of different sizes, allowing for a smooth transition in pipe diameter within a pipeline.
Caps: Caps are used to seal the end of a pipe. They provide protection and prevent leakage.
Crosses: Crosses have four openings and are used to create junctions in a pipeline, allowing flow in multiple directions.
These fittings are widely used in various industries, including oil and gas, chemical, petrochemical, power plants, and plumbing systems, to name a few. They are commonly made from materials such as stainless steel, carbon steel, or alloy steel, depending on the specific application requirements.
