A body flange is an integral flange machined directly on the main body of valves, pumps, strainers or other pressure equipment. It is forged or cast as one single piece with the equipment body and cannot be detached separately. It is the flat, circular ring with bolt holes that protrudes from the main housing (body) of a piece of equipment.Its purpose is to connect the equipment to the adjacent piping system using bolts, gaskets, and nuts, creating a leak-proof, detachable joint.
Key distinction - Body flange: Fixed flange built into the equipment body - Companion flange / Pipe flange: Separate loose flange welded onto pipe ends to mate with the body flange
How It Differs from a "Pipe Flange"
- A pipe flange is a separate component welded to the end of a straight pipe.
- A body flange is an integral part of the equipment's casting/forging. the body flange is where the shell side connects to the piping, and it's machined directly from the shell's forged ring.
