ASTM A270 specifies requirements for sanitary piping. It focuses on controlling the internal and external surface finish, manufacturing processes, and clean packaging of the piping to prevent contamination of materials such as food during transport.
A270 references the material and mechanical properties requirements of A269 but adds specific clauses regarding sanitary surfaces, cleaning, and testing.
Surface finish is central to the A270 standard. It clearly defines the requirements for internal surface roughness (Ra value).
In the food and dairy industries, it is often used in conjunction with the 3-A SSI standard.
Cleaning: All pipes must undergo thorough chemical cleaning, degreasing, and rinsing before leaving the factory to remove all contaminants such as oil, metal particles, and polishing residue.
Packaging: To prevent contamination during transportation and storage, both ends of the pipes must be sealed with clean plastic caps or stoppers and tightly wrapped with clean plastic film. The packaging material should not easily produce particles or fibers that shed.
