Fluid Guidance: They provide pathways for fluids (such as hot oil and cooling water) to enter and exit the heat exchange area.
Fluid Distribution: They ensure even distribution of fluid across the entire heat exchange surface, avoiding short-circuits or dead zones. This is crucial for maintaining efficient heat exchange.
Fluid Collection: They collect and channel the fluids from various heat exchange units after heat exchange and guide them out of the equipment.
Tubesheet/Plate Containment: In many designs, channels are connected to the tubesheet or plate pack, forming a sealed pressure boundary.
Accessibility: In some designs, channels are removable, allowing direct inspection and cleaning of the tubes or plates, making them convenient for maintenance and cleaning.
In a shell and tube heat exchanger, it is usually located at both ends of the heat exchanger and connected to the tube box flange by bolts. It guides the fluid into the tube side.
