ASTM A182 F22 refers to low alloy steel forgings, which belong to carbon steel. The material starting with ASTM A182 is stainless steel.
Carbon steel is an iron-carbon alloy with a carbon content of less than 2.11% and does not contain other alloying elements except for iron, carbon, and impurities such as silicon, manganese, phosphorus, and sulfur within the limit. The carbon content of industrial carbon steel is generally 0.05%~1.35%. The performance of carbon steel mainly depends on its carbon content.
Carbon steel is the earliest used, with low cost, wide performance range, and the largest usage. Suitable for media such as water, steam, air, hydrogen, ammonia, nitrogen, and petroleum products with a nominal pressure of PN ≤ 32.0MPa and a temperature of -30-425 ℃. Commonly used grades include WC1, WCB, ZG25, high-quality steel 20, 25, 30, and low alloy structural steel 16Mn.
Comparison of ASTM A182 F22 Alloy Steel and Related Materials
VS A105: ASTM A105 carbon steel flanges are lower cost and primarily suitable for ambient temperature and medium-to-low pressure applications. However, they are susceptible to oxidation in high-temperature environments, and their high-temperature strength and creep resistance are significantly inferior to those of F22 alloy steel.
VS F11: F11's high-temperature performance is slightly lower than F22's, and its cost is also slightly lower. It is primarily suitable for applications with temperatures slightly lower than 550°C or pressures.
VS F91/F92: F91/F92 are higher-grade heat-resistant steels with superior high-temperature strength and creep resistance, making them suitable for ultra-supercritical power plants. However, they are more expensive and have stricter welding and heat treatment requirements.
VS Stainless Steel Flanges, Such as F304/F316: Stainless steel flanges offer excellent corrosion resistance, but their high-temperature strength, including creep resistance, is generally inferior to that of F22 alloy steel in high-temperature environments of 500°C. They are also more expensive and primarily suitable for applications where corrosion is a primary concern and where temperatures and pressures are not particularly extreme.
ASTM A182 F22 Alloy Steel Flange Applications
Power industry
Petrochemical industry
Boilers and pressure vessels
Any application requiring reliable, permanent or temporary isolation of piping or equipment in high-temperature and high-pressure environments.
