Many engineers select ASTM A694 F56 flanges for these reasons:
Strength Matching
When the connecting pipe is API 5L X56 (yield 56 ksi), an A105 flange (yield 36 ksi) would become the pressure‑limiting component. F56 brings the flange’s yield strength into alignment with the pipe.
Impact Toughness
A694 forgings are typically impact tested (Charpy V‑notch) to ensure ductile behavior at low temperatures, often required for arctic, subsea, or winterized installations. A105 is not automatically impact tested.
Sour Service Compatibility
Many projects specify A694 F56 with NACE MR0175/ISO 15156 hardness restrictions (≤22 HRC) for H₂S environments. A105 flanges often require separate, more restrictive processing to meet these limits.
Structural Integrity
The weld neck hub provides gradual stress transition and allows full radiographic inspection of the weld. This is mandatory in critical applications where a slip‑on or socket weld flange would not be permitted.
