ASME SA240 SS304 Heat Exchanger Tube Sheet for Petrochemical & General Industrial Service
Product Overview
The tubesheet is a perforated circular plate that secures and aligns the tube bundle while maintaining a pressure-tight barrier between shell-side and tube-side fluids. It is the primary pressure-containing component of a shell-and-tube heat exchanger.
This tubesheet is manufactured from ASME SA240 Type 304 stainless steel (UNS S30400) - the industry-standard austenitic grade offering a balance of corrosion resistance, formability, and weldability. The material provides reliable performance in service temperatures up to 465°C (870°F) in oxidizing environments.
Manufacturing: Precision CNC-drilled and machined per client-supplied TEMA layout drawings (triangular or square pitch), with pass partition grooves and sealing faces machined to specification.
Material Specifications
All tubesheets are produced in strict compliance with ASME SA240 / ASTM A240 - no alternative standards are applied.

PT and UT are performed at 100% inspection rate on critical surfaces.
Application Scenarios
ASME SA240 SS304 tubesheets are specified for heat exchanger services where tube-side or shell-side fluids are mildly corrosive and chloride concentrations remain low.
Primary Industries:
Petrochemical & Refining - Heat transfer in refining and chemical processes
Pharmaceutical - Sanitary heat exchangers for controlled processing
Food & Beverage - Process heating/cooling where hygiene and cleanability are required
Power Generation - Low-pressure feedwater heaters, lube oil coolers
General Industry - Water coolers, hydraulic oil coolers, non-aggressive fluid handling
Design pressure limit: ≤ 30 bar (~435 psi) for rolled plate construction.
Advantages & Customization
Engineering Advantages:
Corrosion resistance: Chromium content of 18.0-20.0% and nickel content of 8.0-10.5% provide resistance to oxidation and corrosion from atmospheric exposure, freshwater, steam, and mild chemical solutions.
Precision fit: CNC-drilled tube holes to +0.05 / -0.00 mm tolerance prevent bypass leakage and ensure consistent tube rolling.
Joint integrity: 2 or 3 precision annular grooves per hole maximize mechanical pull-out strength during hydraulic tube expansion.
Traceability: Full material certification with MTRs verifying ASME SA240 compliance for chemistry and mechanical properties.
Customization Available:
Custom OD and thickness per drawing
Tube hole patterns: triangular or square pitch per TEMA layout
Custom groove configurations
Floating or stationary tubesheet designs
Rolled plate (SA240) or forged construction options
FAQ - Common Technical Questions
Q: What is the difference between ASME SA240 and ASTM A240 for 304 tubesheets?
A: ASME SA240 is the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code adoption of ASTM A240. For pressure-retaining components in ASME-coded vessels, SA240 is the applicable specification. Both reference the same material properties for Type 304 (UNS S30400).
Q: When should I specify a rolled plate tubesheet vs. a forged tubesheet?
A: Rolled plate (SA240) is suitable for thicknesses up to approximately 100 mm and pressures up to 30 bar, offering cost advantages. Forged construction (ASTM A182 F304) is required for heavy wall thickness, high pressure, and extreme thermal cycling applications.
Q: What NDE is typically required for ASME SA240 304 tubesheets?
A: Standard requirements include PT (penetrant testing) for surface defect detection and UT (ultrasonic testing) for subsurface flaw detection. PMI is performed to verify alloy composition. Additional testing (hydrostatic, etc.) can be specified per customer requirements.
