Engineering Guidelines: Essential Knowledge for Bundle Replacement & Sizing
Managing Flow-Induced Vibration (FIV): High shell-side cross-flow velocities can induce tube fluttering, resulting in fretting wear at baffle contact points or tube fatigue failure. Recalculating unsupported tube lengths, adjusting baffle spacing, or integrating rod baffles resolves FIV issues in gas coolers.
Pitch Geometry & Mechanical Maintenance: When ordering replacement cores for heavy fouling media, specifying a 90° or 45° square tube pitch layout creates continuous cleaning lanes for high-pressure hydro-blasting during turnaround maintenance. A 30° triangular pitch is recommended for clean fluids to maximize heat transfer density.
Baffle-to-Shell Clearance Rules: Outer Tube Limit (OTL) and baffle outer diameter must strictly adhere to TEMA standards. Excessive clearance allows process fluid to bypass the tube array along the inner shell wall, significantly lowering thermal efficiency in Tema heat exchanger units.
