ASTM A182 F316L / 1.4404 Forged Blind Flange is defined as a solid, disk-shaped, forged austenitic stainless-steel piping component, manufactured in compliance with ASME B16.5 / B16.47 dimensional standards, featuring a raised face (RF) sealing surface on one side, and produced via hot-working (forging) from a low-carbon, molybdenum-alloyed grade of steel (UNS S31603 / 1.4404). Its primary engineering function is to act as a mechanical isolation barrier to terminate the end of a piping system, seal a pressure-vessel nozzle, or provide permanent or temporary access for hydrostatic testing and internal inspection, without any central bore for fluid passage.
The Core Basic Function of ASTM A182 F316L Stainless Steel Blind Flange
The most fundamental function of a blind flange is to act as a solid barrier that permanently or temporarily dead-ends the termination point of a piping system, pressure vessel, or equipment nozzle. Unlike all other flanges (which have a central bore to allow fluid flow), a blind flange is a solid disk with no opening. Its sole purpose is to stop the flow entirely at that specific point.

How It Achieves Its Function (Mechanically)
A blind flange accomplishes its function through a simple mechanical assembly:
Bolting: Multiple bolts pass through the blind flange's bolt holes into a mating flange (or threaded vessel nozzle). The torque applied to these bolts creates a compressive force.
Gasket Compression: This bolting force squeezes a gasket between the Raised Face (RF) of the blind flange and the mating flange's face, forming a leak-tight seal.
Solid Body: Because it has no bore, there is no risk of erosion, corrosion fatigue, or flow-induced vibration at the blind end—it simply acts as a rugged, static cap.
