An ASTM A860 WPHY 42 carbon steel straight tee is a high-strength, butt-weld pipe fitting manufactured to ASME B16.9 dimensional standards. The "WPHY 42" designation indicates a minimum yield strength of 42,000 psi, achieved through controlled heat treatment of ferritic steel. As a straight tee, it has three equal-sized openings with a 90‑degree branch, used to split or combine flow in a piping system. The ASME B16.9 standard governs its center‑to‑end dimensions, wall thickness (matching pipe schedules), bevel ends, and tolerances. This fitting is designed for demanding applications such as oil and gas transmission, petrochemical plants, and low‑temperature service, where superior strength and toughness are required compared to standard carbon steel fittings like ASTM A234 WPB. Installation is by butt‑welding directly to matching high‑yield pipe (e.g., API 5L X42 or X46).

Manufacturing & Testing Requirements per ASTM A860
Manufacturing: Can be seamless (for small sizes) or welded (from plate for large sizes). After welding, the fitting is heat-treated (normalized or quenched + tempered) to restore properties.
Non-Destructive Examination (NDE):
All welds in fabricated fittings must be radiographed (RT) or ultrasonically tested (UT).
No surface defects allowed (magnetic particle or liquid penetrant inspection may be used).
Heat Analysis: Chemical composition certified for each heat of steel.
Product Analysis: Sample from the finished fitting must meet the same chemistry.
Applications
Oil & Gas Transmission: Fits with API 5L X42 or X46 line pipe.
Chemical/Petrochemical Plants: High-pressure or low-temperature hydrocarbon lines.
