ASTM A268 TP409 is a standard specification for seamless and welded ferritic and martensitic stainless steel tubing for general service. TP409 is a low-cost stainless steel grade that is commonly used in exhaust systems, automotive applications, and heat exchangers.
The seamless tube of ASTM A268 TP409 is manufactured through a process of cold drawing or cold rolling. The tube is annealed and pickled to remove any surface impurities and then tested for various quality parameters such as chemical composition, mechanical properties, and dimensional accuracy.
The ASTM A268 TP409 seamless tube has a nominal diameter range of 1/8 inches to 5 inches and a wall thickness range of 0.015 inches to 0.500 inches. The tube can be supplied in various lengths, from single random to double random and cut lengths, as per the customer's requirements.

This TP409 stainless grade combines the following characteristics:
Automotive exhaust systems have to withstand aggressive conditions from high temperatures at the manifold end, sulphuric acid condensate and de-icing salt. Given the severity of these conditions, it can seem surprising that the 11% Cr 409 grade has met the challenge for many years. Exhaust components are also required to be bent, expanded and pressed into all sorts of convoluted shapes. The ability of a ferritic steel to meet these formability requirements is little short of amazing.
