Base Tube Inspection (ASTM A335)

  • Hydrostatic Testing:
    Each base tube is subjected to a hydrostatic test to verify its ability to withstand specified pressures without leakage.
  • Non-Destructive Testing (NDT):
    • Ultrasonic or radiographic testing is performed to detect internal and surface defects.
  • Dimensional Inspection:
    • Outer diameter, wall thickness, and length are measured to ensure compliance with specified tolerances.

Finished Finned Tube Testing

  1. Fin Bonding Test (Source: ASME SA803, Section 9.2):

    • A pull-off test is conducted to verify the mechanical bond strength between the fins and the base tube.
    • Acceptable fin pull-off strength is ≥ 80% of the tensile strength of the fin material.
  2. Visual Inspection (Source: ASME SA803, Section 10):

    • The surface is inspected for visible defects such as unbonded fins, weld imperfections, or deformation of the base tube.
  3. Dimensional Accuracy (Source: TEMA Standards, Table RCB-2):

    • Fin height, pitch, and thickness are measured to ensure compliance with design specifications.
