stainless steel 316 is generally composed of 16 to 18% chromium, 10 to 14% nickel, 2 to 3% molybdenum, and a small percentage of carbon. Adding molybdenum to stainless steel 316 increases its corrosion resistance compared to other grades of stainless steel. The addition of other alloys further enhances its properties.The properties and characteristics of stainless steel 316 make it the second-most widely used stainless steel grade after stainless steel 304. It is used in corrosive environments such as chemical plants, refineries, and marine equipment.

Alloy 309S is an austenitic stainless steel that contains higher levels of chrome and nickel. The addition of nickel and chrome provides improved oxidation in temperatures up to 1830°F. 309S is a low carbon version of 309 and is known for being easy to fabricate and weld by most standard methods. It is often used in furnace equipment, annealing boxes, thermowells, and other high-temperature applications.

Alloy 601 is a standard material of construction for various types of thermal-processing equipment. Industrial-heating applications include baskets, trays, and fixtures for annealing, carburizing, carbonitriding, nitriding and other heat-treating operations. In industrial furnaces, the alloy is used for radiant tubes, muffles, retorts, flame shields, strand-annealing tubes, woven-wire conveyor belts, chain curtains, burner nozzles, and electrical resistance heating elements. Other thermal-processing applications are thermocouple protection tubes, furnace-atmosphere generators, and infrared radiant screens.

alloy 903 (UNS N19903) is an agehardenable nickel-iron-cobalt alloy whose outstanding characteristics are a constant low coefficient of thermal expansion, a constant modulus of elasticity, and high strength. The nominal composition is shown in Table 1. The alloy’s characteristics make it an excellent candidate for applications such as rocket-engine thrust chambers, steam-turbine bolts, springs, gage blocks, and ordnance hardware
