Material selection for cold climate steel structures is critical, as standard carbon steels undergo a ductile-to-brittle transition at low temperatures that can lead to catastrophic brittle fracture under load. Our specification requires structural steel with Charpy V-notch impact energy of minimum 27 Joules at -20°C for primary structural members, verified by mill test certificates for each heat of steel. Welding procedures are qualified with impact-tested weld metal to ensure the complete connection assembly maintains adequate fracture toughness at the design minimum temperature. Packaging & Quality AssuranceAll structural steel for cold-climate buildings is fabricated with enhanced quality control including 100% Charpy V-notch impact testing of steel from each heat number, low-temperature qualified welding procedures with impact-tested weld metal, and additional surface preparation prior to coating application. Insulated panels are manufactured with high-density rock wool cores and factory-sealed joints for vapor barrier continuity. For export to cold-climate destinations, all materials are packed to withstand potential exposure to sub-zero temperatures during transit and at the destination port. Desiccant packs are included in panel crates to prevent moisture accumulation. A complete cold-climate construction manual addressing winter concreting procedures, sealant application temperature requirements, and insulation installation sequence is provided.
