Q1: How can I tell if the valve block is faulty rather than an air spring leaking?
The typical sign of valve block failure is similar to air spring leaks - one side or both sides of the rear sitting too low and failing to raise, with a "Chassis Function Restricted" warning potentially appearing on the instrument cluster. A diagnostic method is to swap the airline from the low rear wheel with the airline from the normal side on the valve block. If the problem transfers to the other side, the valve block is faulty; if the problem remains on the same side, the air spring is likely leaking. Common causes also include faulty height sensors, leaking air struts and compressor damage.
Q2: Should I replace the valve block at the same time as the compressor?
When the compressor fails due to wear and age, fine metallic debris from the wear process can circulate through the air system and enter the valve block, causing solenoid valves to stick or seals to become damaged. If the compressor has been severely damaged, it is strongly recommended to replace the valve block simultaneously to prevent the new pump from prematurely failing again due to blockages in the valve block. Replacing only the compressor while ignoring the valve block may result in the new pump failing again due to internal blockages or leaks.
