Q1: Is a louder-than-usual "sawing" noise from the air compressor a sign of imminent failure?
Not necessarily immediate failure, but it is a clear warning sign. On the W166, a healthy compressor produces a low humming sound. If you hear a sharp grinding, rhythmic knocking, or a noise like sawing wood, it usually indicates worn piston rings, dry bearings, or internal moisture/contaminants. Continued use may cause the pump to seize or blow a fuse. We recommend checking the air filter and measuring the operating current. If the abnormal noise persists for more than 2 days, replace the repair kit or the entire compressor as soon as possible.
Q2: The rear end sags overnight but rises after starting the engine. Is the compressor leaking internally?
In most cases, the compressor is not the main culprit. The top three causes of overnight sagging on the W166 are: micro-cracks in the rear air springs (aged rubber), pressure loss in the valve block seals, and hardened O-rings at the line connections. Internal compressor leakage (e.g., a faulty piston check valve) actually causes frequent cycling while driving and an inability to maintain ride height. Here's a quick test: disconnect the compressor outlet pipe immediately after shutdown. If the outlet holds pressure for over 30 minutes, the compressor is not leaking internally – otherwise, the compressor needs attention.
Q3: After installing a new compressor, one side of the vehicle is higher than the other (not an installation issue). Why?
Don't blame the compressor too quickly. In 90% of W166 cases, this happens because height matching/calibration was not performed. The new compressor has different output characteristics from the old one, and the ride height sensors need to relearn the zero position. Also, if you replaced only the compressor but not the dryer cartridge, aged desiccant particles may have entered the valve block, causing one valve to stick slightly. Correct procedure: install new compressor → use a diagnostic tool to run "Air suspension vent/inflate learn" → measure the fender-to-ground height difference (should be within ±5mm). If the deviation is too large, then inspect the sensor linkage for bending.
