Mercedes-Benz Air Suspension

Mercedes-Benz passenger cars all feature fully independent air suspensions, with front double-wishbone suspension and a patented five-bar multi-link layout at the rear widely used on many models. This layout helps deliver responsive, safe handling and a smooth, well-damped ride at the same time. Air suspension is also divided into front suspension and rear suspension.

Front suspension

The double wishbone design used on many Mercedes-Benz models provides precise wheel position and steering response, as well as low tire noise and vibration. Ride comfort is optimised because the shock absorbers don't have to help position or secure the wheels, so they can be "softer".

The upper wishbone is mounted relatively high, while the lower wishbone is mounted as low as possible so that the anchor points are far apart for sturdiness. The pivots of the two wishbones are offset to provide anti-dive features. Front suspension geometry includes stable caster and positive steering axle offset for good straight-line stability, neutral cornering and precise steering response, and a relatively small turning circle.

Rear suspension

The patented multi-link independent rear suspension currently used on most Mercedes-Benz passenger cars is a five-link design. To evenly distribute all the forces on the rear wheels, the four links are lateral, while the fifth - the track link - is longitudinal. The five-link suspension precisely positions the drive wheels to help ensure the wheels point straight across their vertical travel range and helps prevent unwanted rear-wheel steering effects. This suspension design also uses the principles of kinematics and elastokinetics to take advantage of adjusted flex in the bushings of the five-link layout. The slight wheel angle shifts created by the driving and braking forces are actually used to counteract unwanted throttle steering. Its suspension geometry provides anti-lift and anti-squat characteristics.

The five-link design requires very little space, providing maximum luggage capacity and space for an ample fuel tank. Additionally, it is one of the lightest suspension systems in use, as only the lower transverse links have to be strong enough to withstand bending stresses. The other four links are only in tension and compression, so they are light and strong. The free use of aluminium alloys also helps keep unsprung weight to a minimum.
