Air Spring Applications on Chassis Dynamometers
A chassis dynamometer, commonly known as a "rolling drum" or "drum test bench," is an indoor test device used to simulate vehicle road driving conditions. It is primarily used for vehicle performance testing, emissions testing, durability testing, and R&D. Air springs play a crucial role, particularly in passenger and commercial vehicle testing.
1. Accurate Road Simulation
Data-Driven: First, a prototype vehicle equipped with numerous sensors drives on a target road profile (such as rough asphalt, Belgian roads, or cobblestones), recording signals such as displacement and acceleration at the wheel center or suspension mounting points.
Laboratory Replication: On a chassis dynamometer, the wheels of the vehicle under test are placed on a drum. Air spring actuators are mounted at the four corners of the vehicle, supporting and connecting the vehicle's suspension system (typically via adapters to the wheel hubs).
Signal Reproduction: The control system uses the collected real-world road signals to send commands to the air spring actuators, causing them to move up and down precisely, thereby applying the exact same excitation forces to the vehicle's suspension as on a real road. This allows the vehicle's body to experience vibrations consistent with road travel, even when the vehicle is stationary.
2. Multi-Axis Excitation Capabilities
Advanced road simulators can perform not only vertical (Z) excitation, but also longitudinal (X) and lateral (Y) excitation. This is crucial for simulating full-vehicle response under conditions such as acceleration, braking, and cornering. Air spring systems utilize sophisticated multi-axis control algorithms to coordinate multiple actuators to achieve this complex, multi-dimensional motion.
3. Load and Height Adaptability
Load Support: Air springs can easily support vehicles of varying weights (from light passenger cars to heavy trucks) by adjusting the internal air pressure and providing the required support force.
Stance Maintenance: During testing, the system automatically adjusts the air pressure to maintain a preset, level "driving attitude," ensuring consistent and repeatable test conditions.
4. Improved Testing Efficiency and Safety
All-Weather and Repeatable: Laboratory testing is unrestricted by weather, traffic, or time constraints. The same road profile can be accurately repeated thousands of times, which is crucial for durability testing and reliability verification, significantly shortening R&D cycles.
Fail-safe: If any problem occurs during testing (such as vehicle failure or dynamometer malfunction), the system can be stopped immediately to ensure the safety of personnel and equipment, which is difficult to achieve in real-world road testing.
Emissions Testing: In emissions certification testing (such as the WLTC cycle), the combination of a chassis dynamometer and an air spring road simulator can replicate real-world driving vibrations while accurately collecting exhaust pollutants, ensuring test results are more realistic.
