The Role of HDPE Geomembranes in a Landfill Liner System :

A key point to understand is that the HDPE geomembrane is almost never used alone.

It is part of a composite liner system, which is a multi-layered engineering structure.

A typical bottom liner system from bottom to top looks like this:

Prepared Subgrade: The native soil is excavated and compacted to a smooth, stable base.

Compacted Clay Liner (CCL):

A layer of low-permeability clay (e.g., bentonite-amended soil) is placed and compacted. This is the secondary barrier.

Geosynthetic Clay Liner (GCL):

(Often used instead of CCL) A layer of bentonite clay sandwiched between two geotextiles. It self-seals around punctures.

HDPE Geomembrane (Primary Liner):

This is the primary fluid barrier. It is placed directly on top of the clay layer.

Protection Layer:

A non-woven geotextile is placed on top of the HDPE to protect it from puncture by the sharp stones in the next layer.

Leachate Collection Layer:

A thick layer of gravel or stone with perforated pipes that collects the leachate and directs it to a sump for removal and treatment.

Waste: The solid waste is placed on top of this entire engineered system.

Similarly, a final cover (cap) system uses an HDPE geomembrane on top of the finished waste to prevent water infiltration,

thereby reducing the generation of leachate.

which provides excellent resistance to ultraviolet (UV) radiation, preventing degradation from sun exposure before being covered.

Proven Long-Term Performance: When manufactured and installed correctly,

HDPE liners have a demonstrated service life that can exceed hundreds of years under landfill conditions.
