While HDPE is excellent, it is not infallible. The success of the system depends on addressing its potential weaknesses:

Seaming (Welding):

The weakest points in any geomembrane installation are the seams where individual rolls are joined.

Seams are typically made using thermal fusion welding (dual hot wedge or extrusion).

This process requires highly skilled technicians and rigorous quality control

(destructive and non-destructive testing) to ensure every seam is as strong and impermeable as the sheet itself.

Puncture Vulnerability:

Although strong, a concentrated point load from a sharp rock can puncture the liner.

This is why the protection layer (geotextile) and a smooth subgrade are critical.

Stress Cracking:

Under long-term, continuous tensile stress and in the presence of certain chemicals,

HDPE can be susceptible to stress cracking. This is mitigated by using Resin Grade HDPE (e.g., PE4710)

which has superior stress crack resistance compared to standard HDPE.

Installation Quality:

The performance of the entire system is entirely dependent on proper installation.

This includes handling, placement, seaming, testing, and repair. A small installation flaw can lead to a catastrophic failure.

Long-Term Monitoring:

Even after a landfill is closed, the liner system must be monitored for decades through

roundwater monitoring wells to ensure its ongoing integrity.
