How is Polyester Biaxial Geogrid Made? (Manufacturing Process)
The manufacturing process is very similar to that of uniaxial geogrids but with a different weaving pattern:
Weaving:
Multiple high-tenacity polyester yarns are woven together in both the machine (longitudinal)
and cross-machine (transverse) directions. This creates a stable, square or rectangular aperture
pattern where the yarns in both directions carry significant load.
Pre-Coating:
The woven grid receives an initial coating to lock the junctions in place and protect the fibers.
Primary Coating (Impregnation):
This is the critical step. The grid is immersed in a polymer coating (e.g., PVC, modified latex) and calendered.
This fully encapsulates the individual polyester filaments, bonding them together at the junctions and providing a protective sheath against mechanical damage, installation stresses, and chemical degradation.
Curing & Finishing: The coated grid is passed through an oven to cure the coating and then wound onto large rolls.
Polyester Biaxial Geogrid Key Characteristics and Properties:
Biaxial Strength Orientation:
Its primary feature is its ability to withstand and distribute tensile forces in two perpendicular directions simultaneously.
High Tensile Modulus & Low Elongation:
Like uniaxial polyester geogrids, they exhibit high strength with low strain (typically 10-13% at break),
providing immediate restraint with minimal deformation.
Aperture Stability:
The rigid, coated junctions create a stable network that provides excellent interlock with surrounding soil and aggregate particles.
Excellent Creep Resistance:
Polyester's inherent properties make these geogrids highly resistant to long-term deformation under constant load,
which is vital for permanent infrastructure.
Robustness:
The polymer coating provides superior protection against installation damage, abrasion, and
chemical attack compared to uncoated geogrids.
Comparison with Other Geogrid Types :
vs. Uniaxial Polypropylene (PP) Geogrids:
Polyester is stronger and has much better creep resistance than PP,
making it the preferred choice for permanent, critical structures.
PP is more cost-effective for smaller, temporary, or less critical applications.
vs. Biaxial Geogrids:
Biaxial geogrids have strength in two perpendicular directions and are used for
base reinforcement of roads, parking lots, and platforms where loads are applied
from multiple directions. Uniaxial is specialized for one-directional reinforcement in walls and slopes.

Polyester Biaxial Geogrid are used in applications :
Reinforced Soil Walls (MSE Walls):
This is the most common application. The geogrid layers are placed horizontally between
soil layers to create a stable, reinforced mass that can retain soil at a steep angle.
Reinforced Steep Slopes: Similar to walls, but for slopes at angles steeper than what the
soil could naturally maintain. The geogrid provides the necessary tensile strength to prevent slope failure.
Embankment Stabilization over Soft Soils: When building an embankment on soft, weak ground,
layers of geogrid are used to prevent circular slip failures and distribute the load, ensuring global stability.
Foundation Reinforcement:
In some cases, they are used to improve the bearing capacity of foundations.
