TP316L tubes are furnished in the heat-treated condition. Under 6.2.2, direct quenching after hot forming is permitted for TP316L only when the tube temperature is not less than the minimum solution-treatment temperature. Otherwise, tubes must be reheated to the specified temperature for the required time before quenching.

Typical size range is 1/2 in. [3.2 mm] inside diameter to 5 in. [127 mm] outside diameter, with 0.015 to 0.500 in. [0.4 to 12.7 mm] wall thickness. Controlled variables include chemistry, solution temperature, cooling rate, straightness, ovality, and end finish.

TP316L seamless tubes are selected for boilers, superheaters, heat exchangers, condensers, and pressure equipment in power generation, petrochemical, chemical, oil and gas, and general corrosive service. The low carbon content and molybdenum addition support welded fabrication and resistance to corrosive media.
TP316L has a lower maximum carbon content, 0.035%, which is preferred for welded and corrosive service.
Solution treatment at 1900°F [1040°C] minimum, followed by water or other rapid cooling.
