TOPONE Soft Stainless Steel Cold Heading Wire is developed for cold heading, cold forming and machining applications where material condition and forming behavior are important to the production process.
The wire is supplied in selected stainless steel grades and controlled mechanical conditions according to the required forming process. A soft or relatively ductile condition can be considered for applications involving cold forming, heading or subsequent machining operations.
For cold heading wire, material selection should not be based on hardness alone. Wire diameter, stainless steel grade, tensile strength, elongation, surface condition, forming deformation and machining requirements should be evaluated together.

Note: The final stainless steel grade, diameter, tensile strength, elongation, surface condition and applicable standard should be confirmed according to the customer's forming and machining requirements.
Cold heading wire is used as the raw material for manufacturing fasteners and other formed metal components through cold heading or cold forming processes.
A softer or more ductile wire condition can be considered when the production process requires significant material deformation. During heading, the wire is compressed and formed inside a die to create the required component geometry.
The appropriate wire condition depends on the amount of deformation, component design, tooling configuration and selected stainless steel grade.
For this reason, “soft” should be understood as a specified material condition rather than a general indication of product quality.
Stainless steel undergoes work hardening when it is plastically deformed during cold forming.
During a cold heading process, the material can experience local deformation as the wire is compressed and shaped by the tooling. The amount of work hardening depends on factors such as stainless steel grade, deformation level, forming sequence and component geometry.
This makes the initial material condition an important consideration when selecting cold heading wire.
For components requiring multiple forming operations, the relationship between initial mechanical properties and work hardening behavior should be evaluated during material selection and process development.
Some stainless steel cold heading applications include subsequent machining operations such as cutting, threading or other secondary processes.
When machining is required, the selected stainless steel grade should be evaluated for its machinability as well as its cold-forming characteristics.
A material that is suitable for one forming process may not provide the same machining behavior in another process. Therefore, the final grade should be selected according to the complete manufacturing route.
When specifying the wire, buyers should consider:
Stainless steel grade
Wire diameter
Initial tensile strength
Elongation
Material condition
Cold-forming deformation
Machining process
Surface condition
Finished component requirements
Different stainless steel grades provide different combinations of corrosion resistance, formability, machinability and mechanical properties.
Austenitic grades such as 304 and 316 are widely used for stainless steel wire and fastener applications.
The appropriate grade should be selected according to the required corrosion resistance, forming behavior and service environment.
Certain stainless steel grades are developed with machining characteristics in mind. These grades may be considered when the manufacturing process includes significant secondary machining.
However, machinability and cold-heading suitability should be evaluated together rather than selecting a material based on machining performance alone.
The exact grade should be confirmed according to the component application, forming process, required mechanical properties and applicable standard.
The wire can be used as feedstock for selected cold-headed fasteners where the material condition and forming characteristics are compatible with the component design.
Stainless steel cold heading wire can be processed into screw components through cold heading and subsequent threading operations.
The wire can also be used for small pins, rivets and other formed fastening components.
Where the production process combines cold forming with secondary machining, the stainless steel grade and material condition should be selected according to the complete manufacturing sequence.
Potential applications include:
Fasteners
Screws
Pins
Rivets
Studs
Small hardware
Mechanical components
Electrical components
Precision formed parts
The material can be supplied in a specified soft or ductile condition according to the requirements of the forming process.
The wire is designed for applications involving cold heading and forming, with the final specification determined by the required deformation and component geometry.
The product specification can be evaluated together with the work-hardening behavior of the selected stainless steel grade and the customer's forming process.
For applications involving secondary machining, stainless steel grade selection can take machinability into account together with cold-forming requirements.
Diameter, grade, mechanical properties, surface condition and packaging can be specified according to the customer's production requirements.
Select the grade according to corrosion resistance, cold-forming requirements, machinability and the final service environment.
The wire diameter should match the finished component dimensions and cold-heading process.
Specify whether a soft, ductile or other mechanical condition is required before forming.
The amount of material deformation during heading should be considered because cold forming causes work hardening.
If threading, cutting or other machining operations follow cold heading, the selected grade should be evaluated for both forming and machining behavior.
Bright or soap-coated surface can be selected according to the forming equipment and lubrication requirements.
Quality inspection for cold heading wire should focus on measurable characteristics related to the intended manufacturing process.
Depending on the agreed specification, inspection may include:
Chemical composition
Wire diameter and tolerance
Tensile strength
Elongation
Surface condition
Visual inspection
Coil dimensions
Weight
Packaging condition
Applicable standard requirements
The final inspection requirements should be confirmed according to the agreed material grade, standard and customer specification.
The stainless steel cold heading wire can be supplied in coils, spools or customized packages according to wire diameter, weight, transportation requirements and customer handling conditions.
Export packaging can be discussed according to the customer's production and logistics requirements.
It is used as feedstock for cold heading, cold forming and selected machining processes, including the production of fasteners and formed metal components.
The initial mechanical condition affects how the wire deforms during heading. The required condition should therefore be selected according to the component geometry and forming process.
Work hardening is the increase in material strength that can occur when stainless steel undergoes plastic deformation during cold forming.
Yes. Some production processes combine cold forming with secondary machining. The stainless steel grade should be selected according to both requirements.
The available grade should be confirmed according to the required application, forming process and technical specification. Different grades provide different combinations of formability, machinability, corrosion resistance and mechanical properties.
Yes. The required diameter and tolerance should be specified according to the cold-heading equipment and finished component requirements.
Bright, soap-coated or other specified surface conditions can be discussed according to the customer's forming and lubrication requirements.
