The operational principle involves vaporizing a solid material, typically a metal or ceramic, within a vacuum chamber. The process begins by placing the substrate inside the chamber, which is then evacuated to a high vacuum to eliminate contaminants. Common PVD techniques include sputtering and evaporation. In sputtering, high-energy ions bombard a target material, ejecting atoms that travel to the substrate. In evaporation, the source material is heated until it vaporizes. Reactive gases may be introduced to form compound coatings like titanium nitride (TiN), known for its gold color and extreme hardness.
