The VFD-100 is a double-stage vacuum transformer oil purification system engineered for continuous online operation in substation transformer maintenance. With a rated processing capacity of 6,000 liters per hour, it combines high-vacuum dehydration, multi-stage fine filtration, and rapid degassing in a single integrated skid to restore and maintain insulating oil to IEC 60422 service standards.
Unlike single-stage vacuum systems that rely on a single expansion chamber, the VFD-100 employs a two-stage vacuum separation process. In the first stage, oil is dispersed into a thin film across structured packing with a surface area-to-volume ratio exceeding 250 m²/m³ under a vacuum of ≤200 Pa, driving off the bulk of free and emulsified water. The second stage operates at an ultimate vacuum of ≤5 Pa, targeting dissolved moisture at the molecular level. This staged approach achieves a post-treatment moisture content of ≤5 ppm (ASTM D1533 Karl Fischer method) from inlet conditions as high as 50-80 ppm, without exceeding an oil heating temperature of 65°C — well below the thermal degradation threshold for naphthenic and paraffinic mineral oils.
The system is configured for permanent or semi-permanent installation at the substation, enabling side-stream purification while the transformer remains energized. A valved bypass loop draws 5% to 15% of the total oil volume from the transformer's lower drain valve and returns purified oil to the conservator or top fill port. This continuous circulation maintains oil dielectric strength ≥75 kV (ASTM D877, 2.5 mm gap) and moisture ≤5 ppm on an ongoing basis, eliminating the need for periodic offline treatment campaigns that require transformer de-energization.
Particulate contamination is managed through a three-stage filtration train:
Dissolved gas content in transformer oil — including oxygen, nitrogen, carbon monoxide, and acetylene — directly influences dielectric properties and serves as a diagnostic indicator for incipient faults. The VFD-100 vacuum system reduces total gas content to ≤0.1% by volume (ASTM D3612), restoring the oil's gas-absorption capacity and improving impulse dielectric strength. For transformers with DGA (Dissolved Gas Analysis) results indicating thermal fault or partial discharge activity, the degassing function is a critical step before re-sampling for trend re-baselining.
Oil is heated in stages through a stainless steel shell-and-tube heater bank with a total heating power of 90 kW. Temperature is regulated by a PID controller with a ±1°C steady-state accuracy, maintaining the oil at 55-65°C for optimal dehydration efficiency. A failsafe over-temperature cut-off at 80°C protects the oil from thermal cracking. The heating elements are constructed from 316L stainless steel sheathed Incoloy 800 resistance wire, rated for continuous operation with transformer oil at design temperatures.
The system is operated via a PLC-based control panel with a 7-inch HMI touchscreen. Real-time displays include vacuum level (Pa), oil temperature (°C), oil flow rate (L/H), and differential pressure across each filter stage (kPa). Programmable alarm thresholds trigger visual and audible alerts for high filter differential pressure (indicating element loading), low vacuum, and over-temperature conditions. An automatic shutdown sequence protects the vacuum pump and oil heater in the event of power loss or critical alarm conditions.
