What Is MIM?
MIM (Metal Injection Molding) is a hybrid manufacturing process that combines the design flexibility of plastic injection molding with the material strength and integrity of solid metal.
Essentially, if you need a highly complex, precise metal part in large quantities, MIM allows you to "mold" it like plastic instead of carving it out of a solid block of metal.
How the MIM Process Works?
The process transforms loose powder into a high-density, solid metal component through four primary steps:
1. Compounding: Fine metal powder is mixed with a plastic or wax binder material to create a pelletized feedstock. The binder acts as a temporary vehicle to allow the metal to flow through molding machinery.
2. Injection Molding: The feedstock is heated and injected into a mold cavity, just like standard plastic injection molding. The cooled part removed from the mold is called a green part. It has the exact shape of the final product but is fragile and larger than the final dimensions.
3. Debinding: The green part goes through a chemical solvent or thermal process to dissolve and remove most of the plastic binder. What remains is a porous, brittle matrix of metal powder held together by a trace amount of remaining binder, known as a brown part.
4. Sintering: The brown part is heated in a high-temperature furnace under a protective atmosphere. The temperature is raised close to the melting point of the metal, causing the individual powder particles to fuse together. The remaining binder burns away, and the part shrinks by roughly 15% to 20%, consolidating into a dense, solid metal component.
What Are The Advantages of Using MIM?
MIM fills a massive gap where traditional manufacturing struggles. It is typically the ideal choice when a project meets the following criteria:
High Complexity: It can easily produce intricate features like internal threads, complex curves, thin walls, and multi-axis holes.
Small Size: It is optimized for relatively small parts, typically weighing from less than 1 gram up to 150 grams.
Mass Production: Because it relies on injection molds, it is built for high volume.
High Mechanical Properties: Sintered MIM parts achieve 95% to 99% of the density of wrought metal, meaning they perform nearly identically to machined bar stock in terms of strength and thermal conductivity.
