Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Monoblock LNB?
This design consists of two independent LNBs in a single housing and allows a user the potential of receiving the signal from two different satellites which are at slightly different orbital opposition from a single dish installation. The switching between the satellites is achieved via the use of DiSEqC signals. Monoblock LNB's are available mostly for satellites with a fixed 2°/3°/4.3° or 6° spacing and the range covers Ku band Monoblock switch single, twin and quad outputs. For example where a 2°Monoblock LNB could be used is for the reception of 5°W and 7° W or with 3° distance for the reception of 13° E and 16° E.

Why It Exists: The Problem It Solves
Many TV channels and services are broadcast from clusters of satellites positioned close together in the sky (e.g., 6°, 4.3°, or 3° apart). Instead of installing two separate dishes or a heavy, expensive motorized dish to swing between them, a Monoblock LNBF provides a simple, fixed, and cost-effective solution.
How It Works
  • Two LNBs in One Housing: The "block" in Monoblock refers to the single, integrated unit. The two LNBs are not adjustable; their spacing is factory-set for a specific satellite orbital separation (e.g., 4.3°E/5°E, 13°E/16°E, or the very popular Astra 19.2°E & Hotbird 13.0°E, which are 6.2° apart).
  • Fixed Angle (Skew): The unit is designed to be mounted centrally on the dish's arm. The skew (rotation) of the entire block is adjusted during installation to match the polarization angle for both satellites.
  • Dish Size Requirement: Because the dish's focal point is optimally aligned for the primary (central) satellite, the secondary satellite is slightly "off-focus." Therefore, a larger-than-minimum dish size (often 80cm or larger in Europe) is usually recommended to gather enough signal for both satellites.
  • Connection: A Monoblock LNBF has two output cables (one for each satellite). These connect directly to a satellite receiver with two independent tuners (a Twin Tuner receiver) or to a multi-switch to feed multiple receivers.
Common Uses
  • European Free-to-Air (FTA): The classic combo is Astra 19.2°E (German, French, international channels) and Hotbird 13.0°E (Italian, Middle Eastern, Eastern European channels). A 6° Monoblock is standard for this.
  • International Content: Popular in expatriate communities to receive channels from two nearby satellites from their home country.
  • Simultaneous Recording/Watching: Allows one tuner to record from a channel on Satellite A while watching a channel on Satellite B.

How to Choose?

  1. "How many satellites do I need?"

    • One satellite → Single/Twin/Quad

    • Two nearby satellites → Monoblock (or motor)

  2. "How many receivers/TVs do I need to feed?"

    • One TV → Single

    • Two TVs from one satellite → Twin

    • 3-4 TVs from one satellite → Quad

    • Two TVs from two satellites → Monoblock Twin
