Cuttings that disintegrate during circulation create additional fine solids that are harder to remove at the surface. An encapsulating polymer is selected to interact with suitable cuttings surfaces and help reduce their dispersion during transport. This function must be assessed separately from simply making the mud thicker.

Molecular weight and anionic degree are family ranges, not a single grade specification. Confirm the selected grade and agreed supply criteria before ordering. ISO 9001 refers to the manufacturer’s quality management system, not a guarantee of application performance.
Evaluate cuttings size, shale or clay content, exposure time, fluid salinity and the expected mechanical history. Polymer demand may increase when fresh reactive surface area rises. A clean-water viscosity measurement alone does not show how much polymer remains available after contact with drilled solids.
Review the balance between preserving larger cuttings and controlling the fine-solids fraction. Compare shaker screen behavior, visible agglomeration and circulation properties. Avoid choosing a grade only because it produces the largest flocs in a beaker, since the drilling fluid must remain compatible with the whole solids-control train.
Use representative cuttings and prepare a base-fluid control with the same salinity and inhibitor package as the proposed mud.
Screen selected APAM grades at several additions, using consistent cuttings mass, contact time and agitation.
Measure recovered cuttings mass and observe dispersion, surface condition and screen separation after the test.
Check aged fluid rheology and polymer consumption trends before setting replenishment criteria for a site trial.
Use clean, compatible make-up water and add the powder gradually into an established mixing flow. Avoid dumping powder in one location, which can create lumps with dry cores. The TDS gives 0.1–0.5% as general solution-preparation guidance. If specified on an as-supplied powder mass basis, this corresponds to 1–5 kg of powder per 1,000 kg of final solution; agree the concentration basis for the project.
Allow approximately one hour of agitation as a starting reference, then confirm complete hydration. Water quality, temperature, grade and equipment affect the required time. The TDS’s 200–400 rpm reference is equipment dependent and should not be scaled to a different tank solely by rpm. Avoid severe shear after hydration. Determine the final treatment dosage through the application tests described above.
