Sumarry

  Decal typically comprises three layers: the color, or image, layer which comprises the decorative design; the covercoat, a clear protective layer, which may incorporate a low-melting glass; and the backing paper on which the design is printed by screeing printing or lithography. There are various methods of transferring the design while removing the backing-paper, some of which are suited to machine application.

Application

Place ceramic decals in a shallow pan (such as a developing tray) of warm water and soak for about 5-10 seconds, or until the color layer can be released from the backing paper. The ceramic decal / glass decal can now be applied to the ware in various ways. The two most popular methods are described below.

Method # 1: (For Very Large Decals): Apply ceramic decal / glass decal over the object face-up, and slip out the backing paper from underneath. Adjust the position of the ceramic decal / glass decal on the ware and remove water using a rubber squeegee or damp sponge. This is accomplished by patting down from the center toward the outer edges until all excess water has been removed and wrinkles and air bubbles have been smoothed out.

Method # 2: Remove 10 to 12 ceramic decal / glass decal sheets from the developing tray and place them face-up on a glass slab. Slide ceramic decals / glass decals off the paper with a finger and apply each individually to the ware. The technique for straightening the ceramic decal / glass decal and removing water is the same as the one described in Method #1.

When all of the ceramic decals from the top sheet have been removed from the backing paper, discard the backing paper and begin using ceramic decals from the next sheet.

Avoid soaking the ceramic decal too long, otherwise it may release itself from the backing paper and float in the water, making it difficult to handle. Excessive wetting may also cause the adhesive backing of the ceramic decal  decal colors to dissolve.

Instruction

1.  Clean the surface of your piece (where the decal will go) with alcohol and a clean cloth.
2.  Cut out your image as close to the edges as possible. Try to make curved rather than angled comers and edges. Sharp edges can cause the decal to lift up.
3.  Fill a shallow bottomed pan or tray with warm water. Soak the decal for 30-60 seconds, or until the cover coat and image begin to separate from the paper. (Sometimes the paper will curl and flatten out again)
4.  Moisten the ceramic surface where the decal will go with a wet sponge. This helps you position your decal without wrinkling or tearing it.
5.  GENTLY slide the decal into position on your piece, carefully smoothing it from the center outward, with a small sponge,soft rubber rib, or rubber brayer. This forces all the water and air bubbles out from beneath the decal. Check to make sure there are no air bubbles or edges that won't stick. If the decal is not in complete contact with the surface, it will disappear in the firing. If you need to reposition the decal, flood it with a little water first.
6.  Let the decal dry overnight.
