Product Description

An industrial alumina ceramic pipe is designed to protect steel pipelines against abrasion caused by ash, coal powder, clinker dust, mineral concentrate, tailings, and other abrasive materials.

This wear-resistant ceramic tube combines a fabricated steel shell with closely fitted alumina ceramic tiles. The steel pipe provides structural support, while the ceramic lining protects the internal surface against sliding abrasion and localized particle impact.

Why Do Curved Pipes Wear Faster?

Material does not follow a bend without changing direction. As particles enter the curved section, inertia can drive them toward the outer radius of the pipe. This concentrates impact and abrasion in a smaller area.

The most vulnerable positions are often:

The outer arc of the bend

The bend inlet where material first changes direction

The transition between straight and curved sections

Areas with sudden changes in internal diameter

Ceramic edges that face the incoming material

Flange ends with exposed steel or uneven internal transitions

A pipe may therefore fail even when most of its ceramic lining remains intact. The design should protect the actual wear zone instead of selecting ceramic thickness only from the nominal pipe diameter.

For severe directional impact, thicker ceramic or a reinforced lining arrangement can be considered at the outer arc while maintaining the required finished internal diameter.


Ceramic Tile Arrangement Is Part of the Wear Design

The performance of a ceramic tile-lined pipe depends on more than ceramic hardness.


Tile Size and Pipe Curvature

Ceramic tile dimensions should match the internal diameter and curvature of the pipe. Tiles that are too large may not follow the bore accurately, while excessively small tiles create more joints.

The objective is to achieve a consistent lining surface with controlled gaps and stable contact between the ceramic and the prepared steel shell.


Joint Arrangement

Where practical, ceramic joints are staggered so that continuous joint lines do not become direct wear paths. At bends, the orientation of the tiles should also be reviewed against the direction of material flow.

Raised edges, open gaps, and poorly aligned joints can disturb the flow and expose individual tiles to concentrated impact.


Pipe-End Transitions

The ceramic lining should terminate cleanly at flanges and welded connections. An exposed steel edge or abrupt change in bore can become the first point of wear.

The connection to the next pipe section should therefore be considered as part of the lining design, especially in pneumatic conveying systems.


Hot-Bent Pipe or Fabricated Bend?

The steel shell can be produced as an integrally formed bend or as a fabricated segmented bend. The appropriate option depends on pipe diameter, bend radius, wall thickness, layout, and manufacturing feasibility.

An integral bend is not automatically more wear-resistant in every application. The operating life also depends on particle impact direction, ceramic thickness, tile alignment, bonding reliability, and protection of the outer arc.


What the Ceramic Lining Can—and Cannot—Do

Alumina ceramic provides a hard working surface that can reduce direct abrasion of the steel pipe. When the tiles are correctly fitted and aligned, the internal passage can also remain relatively consistent.

However, the ceramic lining should not be evaluated separately from the complete pipe assembly:

  • The operating-temperature limit depends on the bonding or fixing system, not only on the ceramic.
  • Chemical compatibility must include the ceramic, joint material, bonding system, and exposed steel.
  • The ceramic lining does not compensate for an unsuitable pipe wall thickness, flange standard, or pressure design.
  • Service life cannot be predicted from ceramic hardness alone.
  • Claims such as a fixed multiple of steel-pipe life are unreliable without information about the material, velocity, impact angle, and previous wear pattern.

Typical Conveying Duties

Alumina ceramic tile lined pipes can be considered for:

  • Fly ash, bottom ash and pulverized coal conveying
  • Cement raw meal, clinker dust and finished cement handling
  • Mineral concentrate, tailings and mine backfill pipelines
  • Coal slurry and coal preparation systems
  • Lime, gypsum and compatible slurry transport
  • Silica powder and other abrasive mineral materials
  • Steel-plant dust and bulk-material conveying systems

Dry pneumatic conveying, gravity flow, and slurry transport create different wear mechanisms. The lining structure should therefore be selected according to the actual process rather than the industry name alone.


How the Pipe Is Prepared and Inspected

Before lining begins, the pipe dimensions, bend geometry, flange orientation, and internal surface condition are checked against the confirmed drawing.

The installation process focuses on:

Steel-surface preparation

Ceramic tile fit and installation sequence

Tile alignment around the pipe circumference

Joint width and staggered arrangement

Outer-arc protection in curved sections

Finished internal diameter

Ceramic termination at both ends

Final inspection includes the internal lining condition, pipe and flange dimensions, weld appearance, flange orientation, and conformity with the approved drawing.


Packing Curved and Flanged Pipe Sections

Finished pipes are secured in reinforced wooden cases or on suitable steel frames according to their size and weight.

Flange faces, ceramic-lined openings, and pipe ends are protected against impact, moisture, and foreign-material entry. Long or curved sections are supported at suitable positions to reduce movement during handling and transportation.


Start With the Wear Map, Not Only the Pipe Diameter

For an accurate lining recommendation, please provide:

  • Pipeline drawing and quantity
  • Conveyed material
  • Particle size or slurry concentration
  • Conveying velocity or flow rate
  • Operating temperature and pressure
  • Existing pipe material and wall thickness
  • Current wear position and service history
  • Required finished internal diameter
  • Connection and flange standard
  • Site photographs of the worn pipe, if available

A photograph showing where the previous pipe failed can often provide more useful information than a general request for “thicker ceramic.”


Buyer Questions

Is this a solid alumina ceramic tube?

No. It is a composite pipe consisting of a steel shell, an insulation layer, and alumina ceramic tiles. The steel provides structural support, while the ceramic protects the internal wear surface.


Can ceramic tiles be installed in both straight pipes and bends?

Yes. Tile dimensions and arrangement are adjusted according to the pipe diameter and curvature. Bends require additional attention to the outer arc and material-entry direction.


Should the same ceramic thickness be used throughout a bend?

Not necessarily. A uniform lining can be used under moderate wear, while severe directional impact may require additional protection at the outer arc. The finished bore must still be checked.


Is this pipe suitable for high-temperature conveying?

It may be, but the temperature limit must be based on the complete installation structure. Ceramic can tolerate high temperatures, while the bonding or fixing system may have a different operating limit.


Is the pipe resistant to acids, alkalis, and slurry?

Alumina ceramic has good chemical stability in many industrial environments, but the complete pipe—including the bonding system, joints, and steel shell—must be checked against the actual medium.


Which is better: an integral bend or a segmented bend?

Neither structure is automatically better for every project. Selection depends on the required diameter, bend radius, dimensional tolerance, manufacturing feasibility, and wear direction.


What should be sent for a quotation?

Please send the pipe drawing, quantity, conveyed material, operating conditions, required ceramic thickness, finished internal diameter, and connection standard. If replacing a worn pipe, include photographs showing the failed area.
